Patterns of alcohol use can change over the course of a lifetime or even over a semester. Deciding if your patterns of alcohol use are problematic can sometimes feel difficult. One way to conceptualize alcohol use is to think of it as behavior falling on a continuum. Where would you place yourself on the continuum below? If you have trouble placing yourself, consider asking a trusted friend to locate where they feel your use lies.

Breastfeeding has many proven benefits for both mother and baby, yet in the UK, we have some of the lowest breastfeeding rates in Europe. The World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 26 weeks of life and then solid food alongside breastfeeding. In 2005, 78% of mothers in England attempted to breastfeed their babies at birth, but less than 1% of UK mothers exclusively breastfed to 6 months. This article aims to provide an overview of some of the problems encountered when breastfeeding and how they can be overcome to allow continuation of feeding.

Although it is easy to think of the eye and its various disorders in isolation and as distinct from the workings of the rest of the body, in truth, many systemic diseases can reflect themselves in visual symptoms and abnormalities on ophthalmic examination. From hypertension and diabetes to multiple sclerosis and medication toxicity, the eye can truly be a window through which we can see these conditions and their effects on our bodies. In this issue of the Eye-Q Newsletter we will briefly explore some of the more common medical illnesses and their ophthalmic findings.

Cervical cancer forms in the interior lining of the cervix, the junction of the vagina and uterus. The development of cervical cancer is typically slow, and occurs over a period of years. The progression to cervical cancer begins with the development of precancerous changes in normal cells. Most of these changes, even if left untreated, will not progress to cancer. However, in 2018 the American Cancer Society estimates 13,240 women will be diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer and 4,170 will die of the disease in the United States.
