The exchange of marine goods in the interior of the Europeancontinent is traditionally equated with the exchange of Spondylus shellitems. In this long-lasting exchange network, significant role of any othermollusks has not been identified so far. Contrary to this evidence, in theNeolithic settlements of the Aegean and the Adriatic regions, where, it isbelieved, Spondylus had been imported from, many other shells were usedfor manufacturing adornment. Is it possible that shell diversity in theBalkan coastal area is somehow reflected on the interior of the continent? Inthis paper, credibility of this question is assessed through a study of shell-madeitems from the side of Vinca in the vicinity of Belgrade, Serbia.

The archaeological investigations concerning the Bronze Age withinthe area of the Middle and Lower Danube demonstrated the existence of anethnical-cultural complex characterized through a series of commonelements that suggest the relationship among the different ethnical-culturalmanifestations within this area. The main common denominator is theceramics whose ornamentation consists in motifs executed throughprinting, incision, notches and successive stitches. The motifs were inlayedwith white substance. The funerary common ritual, respectively thecremation, the anthropomorphical statues, the bird-shaped representationsand the clay little bells suggest similar religious beliefs.

During 2003-2006 a project on the Starcevo-Cris pottery was carriedout at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London (UK). Theaim of the project was to shed more light on the Neolithisation process ofthe Balkan Peninsula. The methods employed to answer this question werescientific analysis of ceramics and fired clay objects, and radiocarbon datingof samples, from 20 early Neolithic sites in Serbia, Romania, and Slavonia. The ceramic analyses were carried out in order to define possibleroutes of trade/exchange in the early Neolithic and the manufacturingprocess of fired clay objects. The radiocarbon dating was required to definean absolute chronology for the early Neolithic in this region and to identifypossible routes for the spread of the Neolithic (Biagi P., Spataro M., 2005;Biagi et al., 2005).
