Ultrasonography (US) is an imaging modality based on the reflection of sound waves directed at tissues with the aid of a transducer. Since different tissues reflect sound waves at various frequencies, images also demonstrate variations. Soft tissues transmit sound waves better, they are hypoechoic, and appear as dark image. Pulmonary parenchyma contains air, which dissipates ultrasound energy, so it is not well visualized on US.[1]

Results: Diabetic patients had higher body mass index (BMI) than controls (p=0.01). Serum cystatin C levels were similar between the three groups (p>0.05). Sex and/or smoking had no effect on cystatin levels. Higher cystatin C levels were negatively associated with microalbuminuria. Cystatin C levels were correlated with BMI and HOMA-IR in pre-diabetic patients (p=0.039 and p<0.05, respectively) but not in diabetic patients or controls, when adjusted for age and gender.

Methods: A total of 47 eyes of 42 patients – 25 females; 17 males – on whom silicone tube intubation was performed due to congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CLDO) were involved in the study. As part of the study, a monocanalicular tube was placed in 23 of the 47 eyes (1st group), while a bicanalicular tube was placed in 24 of the eyes (2nd group). The average age in the first group was 6.13 years (1–15 years) and 4.51 years (1–15 years) in the second group. Extubation was performed in the postoperative 4.2 month (2–7 months) in the first group and in the postoperative 4.4 month (2–7 months) in the second group. Average length of follow-up of cases was determined to be 10.1 months (6–72 months).

In great majority of the patients, nasal deformity in association with cleft lip can be observed.[3] Based on severity of nasal deformity, intervention will likely be required both to repair the cleft lip and/or alveolar cleft, as well as subsequently, once nasal development comes to a halt.[4] In patients born with severe nasal deformities, nasal interventions performed during infancy have generally become insufficient, and corrective septorhinoplasty operation is required in adulthood.[5] In this article, psychological as well as physiological effects experienced by 6 patients who underwent surgical correction of nasal deformity secondary to complete lip deformity during adulthood were evaluated.
