Conodont faunas from the kukersites and kukersitic limestones of the Kivioli Member are similar to coeval collections from other sedimentary facies and there are no taxa endemic to this unusual environment. The presence of Amorphognathus tvaerensis and the absence of Pygodus anserinus suggest that the lower part of the Kukruse Stage is referable to the A. tvaerensis conodont Biozone and that the base of the Upper Ordovician lies at or beneath the base of the Kukruse Stage.

. Various methods have been used to determine the age of the Kaali craters. Most of contemporary investigators believe the age of the craters to be some 4000 years. Studies of microtektites in the Piila mire close to Kaali have concluded that the craters were formed some 7500 years ago.

Chitinozoans of the Margachitina margaritana Biozone and the Llandovery–Wenlock boundary in West Estonian drill cores 西爱沙尼亚岩心中Margachitina margaritana生物带和Llandovery-Wenlock边界的几丁质动物

. The succession of chitinozoan taxa in the uppermost Llandovery and lowermost Wenlock of the Viki, Ohesaare, Kaugatuma, and Ruhnu drill core sections is described and correlated with the global stratotype section of the basal Wenlock in Hughley Brook, Shropshire, England. The most important biomarkers for the identification of the Llandovery(cid:150)Wenlock boundary in Estonian sections are the disappearance levels of Ramochitina nestorae , Conochitina acuminata , C . cf. flamma , and Angochitina longicollis . In the West Estonian cores this boundary corresponds to a level in the middle or upper part of the Margachitina margaritana Biozone. In the Viki and Ohesaare cores it coincides with the bentonite layers above the accepted boundary between the Adavere and Jaani regional stages and correlates with a level in the middle of the murchisoni graptolite Biozone. Three new species, Belonechitina oeselensis , Ancyrochitina mullinsi , and Eisenackitina inanulifera , are described.

SEARCH FOR THE DOSE-SENSITIVE OPTICALLY STIMULATED LUMINESCENCE RESPONSE IN NATURAL CARBONATES 在天然碳酸盐中寻找剂量敏感的光刺激发光响应
Pub Date : 1900-01-01 DOI: 10.3176/geol.2001.3.01

Carbonates of different origin, such as Iceland spar, calcites, and mollusc shells, used as electron spin resonance and thermoluminescence palaeodosimeters, were studied in order to determine their suitability for optically stimulated luminescence dating. The stimulation/excitation spectra of the afterglow of the samples were recorded in the wavelength range of 250 -1100 nm. The results of the study show that these spectra present either excitation spectra of Mn 2+ ion fluorescence (samples of calcites and Iceland spar, red emission recorded) or the excitation spectra of primary phosphorescence (samples of carbonates, including mollusc shells; short-wave emission bands recorded). The recorded stimulation spectra revealed no spectral bands sensitive to stimulation by ionizing radiation, which would disappear as a result of heating and could thus be related to deep traps in carbonates, needed in dating. The causes of this situation which is unusual in luminescent crystals, including luminescence (palaeo)dosimeters, and the ways of overcoming the difficulties in optical dating of natural carbonates are discussed.
