Unfinished story of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics
Pub Date : 2019-07-17 DOI: 10.4324/9780429244049-11
A. Šmídová, T. Šmíd
The chapter provides an empirical insight into the ongoing conflict in Ukrainian Donbass, which seems to have resulted in the formation of two more de facto states – the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics. The chapter focusses on control over the territory and its population, the functioning of state institutions, and attempts to gain international recognition. Further on, the authors discuss the historical and ideological context from which both republics have emerged, analyzing their historical continuity, ideological basis, and economy. In conclusion, the authors raise the question as to whether these entities can be considered as genuine de facto states.

Explaining de facto states’ failure
Pub Date : 2019-07-17 DOI: 10.4324/9780429244049-18
H. Aliyev
The chapter is devoted to a number of potential causes of the failure of de facto states. Along with more conventional approaches – such as a focus on reintegration with the parent state, and the lack of good governance and economic problems – this study also points out neglected and under-researched causes of de facto state failure. These include tribalism, factionalism, and ideological fragmentation. This chapter emphasizes that de facto political entities often tend to follow similar paths to failure as recognized nation-states. Similarly to recognized states, de facto states may fail well before their loss of sovereignty and territorial control.
