During a yearlong observation, settling fluxes of seston in the epilimnion and hypo- limnion of Lake Viitna Linajarv varied from 230 to 1400 mg m -2 d -1 . Most of the seston consisted of particulate organic matter (POM). The POM content in the dry matter of surface sediments sampled from the entire lake floor was on average over 50%. Seasonal changes in the distribution of chlorophyll a in the lake and the content of POM reveal the important role of fresh planktonic particles in the deposition. A strong correlation between POM and particulate inorganic matter in the settling matter during stratification indicates flocculent settling of the mineral particles. Resuspension from the littoral zone results in the focusing of sediment into the deep basin of the lake.

. The aim of this work was to introduce the last version of the hydrodynamic–ecosystem model FinEst and to supplement this model to enable its easy application for local areas. Complications in the case of local areas appear in the treatment of initial and open boundary conditions. This paper demonstrates how to handle the open boundaries and the initial data using a multi-step scheme of calculations in the Baltic Sea. First the model was applied for the entire Baltic Sea. Then the results of these calculations were used for the Gulf of Finland (GOF). Finally, calculations for some local areas in the GOF were made using the initial and open boundary conditions from the results of the GOF calculations.

. A 10-day multidisciplinary experiment with the aim to study the development of late summer phytoplankton bloom and the controlling hydrodynamic mechanisms was carried out at the entrance to the Gulf of Finland in July 1996. Clearly defined physical phenomena (cid:150) a downwelling, near-slope jets, and a mesoscale anticyclonic eddy (cid:150) were observed in the area during the study period. Due to the relatively strong currents connected to the jets and eddy periphery (current velocity up to 35 cm s (cid:150)1 ), the advection of different water masses through the sampling area gave rise to a noteworthy variability of biological parameters. However, the formation of the eddy was reflected in horizontal patterns of the patchiness of phytoplankton productivity and species composition in the upper layer. The largest value of primary production was observed in the water mass trapped inside the anticyclonic eddy. The flagellates abundance was the highest inside the eddy, while the proportion of cyanobacteria in the plankton community was the largest outside. Our conclusion is that the vertical motions associated with the mesoscale eddy and occasional mixing events on the background of low concentrations of dissolved inorganic N and P created horizontally different conditions, which favoured simultaneous development of different groups of phytoplankton in a small spatial scale.

. The ST 1000 is a multipurpose fibre optic spectrometer produced by Ocean Optics Inc. It consists of three CCD array spectrometers mounted on the same electronic circuitry board and driven by the electronics ofthe main spectrometer. The spectral band of our instrument is 350-850 nm with average resolution of 0.5 nm. Light is conducted to the gratings through 2 m long fibre optics. For data acquisition a plug-in board PCMCIA card is used. Integration time, number of scans, and the interval between them can be varied by software provided by the manufacturer. We built a frame for the instrument to carry out field measurements, calibrated the measuring system, and tested the suitability of the instrument for remote sensing of aquatic environments. Comparison with airborne and shipboard remote sensing spectrometers as well as underwater spectrometer data was carried out. Our results show that the ST 1000 spectrometer can be used in remote sensing although it is designed for laboratory measurements.

Recent studies showed that the eastern Gulf of Finland should be considered as a "hot spot" in the Baltic Sea area, taking into account the high rate of alien species introductions, the negative environmental impacts of established alien species, and rapidly increasing export-oriented shipping. At minimum, 14 new species have established in the eastern Gulf of Finland during the last two decades, including several invasive species. Alien species are playing an important role in the structural and functional organization of communities, specifically in the littoral zone, but this role has not been fully evaluated yet. Rapid development of new ports in the eastern Gulf of Finland will result in manifold increase in the volumes of discharged ballast waters, as well as in associated risk of new invasions of harmful aquatic species in the near future. Development of effective management options to control established nuisance species and to prevent or minimize the risk of new invasions is urgently needed.
