In this paper we study the feasibility of providing automotive users the Internet access using C2C communication with help of roadside infrastructure and the novel Vehicular Communication Gateways (VCG), which is developed in the MYCAREVENT project. A technical solution of managing the opportunistic wireless links between On-Board Units (OB Us) and Road-Side Units (RSUs), as well as between OB Us and VCGs, is developed based on WA VE system. To further enhance the performance of WA VE system concerning IP traffic in highly dynamic vehicular environments we propose a link status aware MAC queue architecture. Stochastic simulation results are presented to prove the concepts and validate the proposed solutions.

In this paper, we develop a new beacon-less localization scheme for non-flat surfaces for wireless sensor networks. Simulations are conducted for a Gaussian distribution of nodes about the deployment points on the non-flat terrain, as well as a node deployment corresponding to the terrain surface characteristics. The localization errors for the proposed method, for a non-flat terrain with the Gaussian distribution of nodes and the terrain conforming distribution, are comparable to those in the case of the location discovery scheme in (Lei Fang et al., 2005) for the flat surface. The localization errors, when the distribution of nodes corresponds to the terrain are slightly larger than when the nodes are normally distributed. The results are applicable to localization in real life wireless sensor networks deployed over non-flat terrain.

For more efficient and economical management of substations, the concept of a smart substation has been introduced using intelligent and ubiquitous IT techniques. Also, many site studies for smart substations have been performed. In this paper, we propose ubiquitous IT prototype hardware, functions and communication interfaces on an embedded platform. Also, we suggest operating system architecture to implement smart substations effectively.

We describe an identity based signature scheme that uses biometric data to construct the public key. A biometric reading provided by the alleged signer would be enough to verify the signature. We make use of fractal transform and entropy arrangement algorithm to generate the public key string from a biometric measurement. We then make use of Shamir scheme [1] to perform signing and verification. Finally, we describe two possible attacks on this system and suggest ways to combat it. The result of experiments have shown that the scheme could satisfy the practical applies.

Quality of service (QoS) support in multimedia applications is a crucial requirement. Many researchers focus on the performance enhancement of video transmission and they use simulation tools to evaluate their proposed mechanisms. Most simulation tools only use network-level performance metrics, such as throughput. However in some cases, network-level performance metrics can not evaluate the video or audio delivered quality well. To address this issue, a series of simulation tool-sets are developed. However, current simulation tool-sets can only evaluate the video delivered quality; they cannot evaluate the audio delivered quality. Therefore, to achieve more realistic simulations, we combined Evalvid with NS-2 VLC and RTPtools to obtain a new tool-set called as MyEvalvid_RTP. By using this new simulation tool-set, researchers can evaluate not only the video delivered quality but also the audio delivered quality.

Multimedia that is characterized by multi-media, multi-features, multi-representations, huge volume, and varieties is rapidly spreading due to the increasing number of application domains, the establishment of the information super-highway, and the development of Internet technologies. Thus, the development of a multimedia information system is urgently needed to rapidly and accurately retrieve the required information from the huge amount of multimedia data available. While conventional retrieval systems have focused on text, current multimedia systems have developed along the lines of content-based video retrieval due to the wide use of digital video data available. The goal of this paper is to achieve an efficient and effective multimedia retrieval system that meets the current needs mentioned above. Through this experiment, an improved video segmentation system is implemented that performs more quickly and precisely than the existing techniques.

Parallel TCP streams are used for data transfer between clusters in today's high performance applications. When parallel TCP streams are used on LFN, part of streams fail to get enough bandwidth because of congestion generated by the parallel TCP streams themselves [5]. As a result, data transfer throughput is bottlenecked by the slow streams. In this paper, we propose the Stream Harmonizer that schedules packet transmission of parallel TCP streams to balance the bandwidth. The purpose of the Stream Harmonizer is to reduce the congestion that is generated by the parallel TCP streams themselves to improve the performance of the slow streams. The Stream Harmonizer reduces congestion by reducing the bandwidth of fast streams by in creasing the round trip time (RTT) of them. A hardware based lightweight scheduling algorithm is used to realize wire-rate intensive scheduling at high-speed backbone network. The Stream Harmonizer is able to schedule packets without exchanging additional information with end hosts. In this paper, we implement the Stream Harmonizer using TGNLE-1, an FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) based 10Gbit Ethernet experimental testbed. In addition, we evaluate the Stream Harmonizer using an FPGA based network emulator.

Future smart homes will create comfortable living environments which are embedded with a wide range of intelligent functionalities including home computing, entertainment, health care, and security. These place stringent requirements on the home networking architecture. In this paper, we propose a novel concept of Virtual Wireless Wire (Viwiwire), which is a set of consecutive high bandwidth wireless links over which concurrent transmission and reception can operate without interference. Based on this concept, a number of specific mesh networking architectures are proposed for future smart home networking. These include: wireless busline mesh, wireless ring mesh, and general multi-path mesh. The paper presents analyses that demonstrate the high performance of the proposed networking architectures.

The IEEE 802.15.4 standard enables device level wireless connectivity in personal area networks. Its medium access control (MAC) protocol supports the exclusive use of a wireless channel through guaranteed time slots (GTS). However, the bandwidth underutilization problem occurs in GTSs when the used bandwidth is less than the available. In addition to the standard GTS allocation scheme, two other alternatives, namely i-GAME and granulated allocation scheme, have been proposed. This paper presents a performance comparison study of the three GTS allocation schemes using network calculus.

The main goal of this paper is to emphasize the possible danger of impact of social engineering in ubiquitous computing, and importance of establishing not only technical, but also non-technical mechanisms for preventing it. The paper describes how to ensure security and privacy protection in terms of user own responsibility and the use of proper policy and legislation mechanisms.
