Subject-oriented specification of IoT scenarios 物联网场景的主题导向规范

Internet of Things (IoT), with its notion in industrial settings in Europe and particularly German-speaking countries also named Industry 4.0, is a major topic in the digitalization wave. Beside horizontal integration on the shop floor, this concept also includes vertical integration of technical layers and business layers, both within organizations and cross-enterprise. IoT networks comprising activities and communication of entities in both directions need to be modeled before being implemented. Earlier research investigates the capabilities of business process modeling approaches to model such IoT-aware processes. Results include suggestions, e.g., to extend BPMN by introducing additional language elements. Due to its nature, S-BPM seems to be a promising candidate for modeling IoT scenarios with its existing notation. In order to shed light on this assumption, we refer to the requirements related work formulated for IoT modeling languages and relate S-BPM features to them. Using an example, we show how selected requirements are tackled by S-BPM.

The Subject-oriented Business Process Management (S-BPM) paradigm provides concepts and methods to support the development of in- and inter-organizational parallel and distributed processes. S-BPM Process Models are directly executable and formal execution semantics enable different software development teams to develop S-BPM engines with equivalent execution behavior. We did a state of the art analysis of existing formal S-BPM execution semantics and analyzed the required language elements of an advanced smart energy grid Process Model. We extended an existing Abstract State Machines (ASM) specification to close the identified specification gaps.

Recent studies explore context-awareness as a new paradigm and principle in BPM (Business Process Management). However, there is still a lack of consensus on the meaning of context related concepts in the BPM area. While most people tacitly understand what context is and use context to optimize business processes, they find it hard to define. Researchers commonly provide their own definitions according to their own background and expertise, which leads to diversity and inconsistency. Hence, this paper provides a comprehensive understanding of the context concepts of context-aware BPM based on an extensive literature review. We excessively review and analyze existing definitions of the context concept, and propose a pyramid model to depict the trade-off between generalization and specification. Definitions of context-aware business processes have been derived from various perspectives of how a business process can potentially benefit from being aware of its context, which can be broadly classified to three categories including process flexibility, personalized services and knowledge-intensive tasks. Then we propose our definitions of the context of a business process and the context-aware business process, which can be used in general applications. In addition, context related concepts of business processes, including context-sensitive, -aware and -adaptive business processes, are clarified and distinguished to set the theoretical foundation of context-aware BPM consistently.

Agility is considered as a key concept to increase flexibility in company environments. Especially in times of digital disruptions, attempts are made to transfer the software engineering methods and rules (e.g., SCRUM) to other processes from other domains without having BPM standards so far. This article collected 17 known agility models relevant for BPM based on a literature review. Twelve essential dimensions to increase agility are described (e.g., communication, technology, process team, change), which might serve with specific values (e.g., frequency, channel and structure) as potential development paths for increasing agility in business processes.

Modeling complex process systems with subject-oriented means 用面向主体的方法对复杂过程系统建模

In an organization more or less all business processes are interconnected forming a large network or ecosystem of related activities. To describe (model) such complex process systems a formal language must offer the possibility to structure the according models. It must allow to describe the environment of a considered process and illustrates its relationships to other process models. Furthermore, it should not require that all connected models are created at the same time by the same persons with the same knowledge about all other process models and their constraints. In this article we describe a method to model business process model systems with an arbitrary number of abstraction levels. We introduce the structuring concept in the subject-oriented language PASS and show how the concept can be also applied in BPMN models. Furthermore, we present a fundamental discussion and disagreement about extends and choice of vocabulary that is derived from this concept.

Internet of Things (IoT) applications are increasingly used in domains critical for society and adapted to individual needs. Thereby, various physical entities, humans and computer programs are dynamically networked while being situated in different locations. For system stakeholders, reliable operation requires intelligible design and adaptability at run time. The more users can adjust IoT systems dynamically, the more transparent has to be how specific requirements can be met. Executable and role-specific process models are a viable starting point, as they represent the behavior of components and the flow of control. However, they need to be extended with effective data exchange mechanisms between IoT system elements. In this paper, we utilize the subject-oriented concept and notation for role-specific process modeling and communication design of IoT systems and enrich them with a data sharing facility, so-called shared input pools. In order to avoid a single point of failure in system operation, we propose to implement them as blockchains. IoT-elements can then interact and exchange data in a semantically correct and robust way, in particular when behavior changes may occur dynamically.

The paper discusses the application of stories, use-case slices and personas to S-BPM specifications. Stories are used to specify the behavior of a system in an abstract way. Personas drive the specification of such stories. Use-case slices as part of a use case specification combine one or several stories. A slice allows the the corresponding implementation in one cycle of agile software development. The paper suggests the usage of stories and slices of S-BPM behavioral models. The stories are inspired by personas. Additionally, the splitting of subjects of S-BPM into sub-roles that are related to personas is suggested. The suggested extensions allow an agile development of S-BPM specifications and delivers more precise subject-interaction diagrams.

The adoption of new digital technologies and decentralized control paradigms in the production industry requires incremental approaches for the transformation of existing processes and systems. This paper presents experiences from a digitalization project at ENGEL Austria that aims to introduce a new internal logistics system based on automated guided vehicles (AGVs). The project was carried out using Subject-oriented Business Process Management (S-BPM). In particular, subject interaction diagrams represent the increments in the transformation from an initial, largely human-operated system towards a highly automated AGV system. The diagrams led to a better understanding of the workers' tasks and what changes are required with every addition of a new component or new interaction with an existing component.
