A system for visualizing the dynamic behavior of programs written in the NeWS language is presented. Experience with the system's design and implementation is discussed. The functionality of the current prototype is described. By presenting multiple views of execution and supplying default animations for the various operators of the language and its dynamic concepts and mechanisms, the system can help the user develop a better feel for the execution model of NeWS.<>

Silicon paper and a visual interface for neural networks 硅纸和神经网络的视觉界面

An interface technology that is represented by an LCD device equipped with a transparent tablet and a pen-like pixel selector, called silicon paper, is described. The technology is advocated as a possible replacement of the current mouse-based interface. Handwritten character recognition by a neural net is an essential component of the silicon paper interface. In order to facilitate an efficient experimental environment for neural net design, a visual interface for a neural net simulator was designed and implemented. The design was used as a testbed for a new paradigm of user interface suitable for the silicon paper technology.<>

The replacement of pointers with graph grammar productions is discussed. Such a replacement provides a substantial improvement in the programming model used, makes better use of current high-resolution screen technology than a strictly text-based language, and provides improved support for parallel processing due to characteristics of the graph grammar formulation used. The background of this project, and the relationship to visual languages, is described. The use of graph grammars in programming and the graph grammar programming languages are described. The editing environment being developed for programming in graph grammars is presented. Compiler development for the system is described.<>

A grammar formalism and parsing algorithm for the purposes of defining and processing visually based languages is presented. The work is set in the context of a wider effort to process input sketched on interactive tablets and worksurfaces, as well as to support interface dialogues using these technologies. After outlining the particular demands that these overall goals place on the visual language component, a grammar formalism and an incremental parsing algorithm that use these grammars are presented. A comparison of this approach to others in the field is given.<>

Declarative specification of visual languages 可视化语言的声明性规范

In order to specify the relationship between pictures and their meaning, a class of declarative, constraint-based picture specification languages is introduced. These extend previous approaches to picture specification based on constraints and grammar formalisms. As the languages are defined as an abstract language scheme, it is ensured that they share a common declarative semantics and execution model. The declarative semantics allows both people and machines to easily reason about a specification independently of any underlying implementation. The operational semantics permit a picture specification to be used to both generate and recognize pictures defined by visual languages. Implementation techniques developed for constraint logic programs, which enable this to be done efficiently, are discussed.<>

NOVIS, a visual environment which supports the interactive development and animated simulation of special-purpose parallel architectures, is presented. NOVIS lets users design networks at an abstract level by placing processing elements into a connected grid of arbitrary (user-selected) shape. The environment's underlying philosophy of maximal information hiding makes intimate familiarity on the part of the user with the details of low-level issues (such as process schedule maintenance and event dispatching) unnecessary. Layout violations and exceptions detected during execution simulation (e.g., deadlock) are automatically reported to the user. An overview of NOVIS's features is followed by examples that show the environment's capabilities in a variety of useful applications.<>

An investigation into how the properties of spatial data, in particular their graphical representation, influence the interaction between user and system is presented. Of particular interest are the concepts humans have about spatial data and the operations that allow them to manipulate and examine the graphical representation of spatial data. An overview of the architecture of spatial information systems is given, concentrating on user interfaces for spatial data handling. An investigation into how users manipulate the representation of spatial data is given, followed by the introduction of the corresponding operations necessary to examine the representation. A series of interface snapshots is given to demonstrate these ideas in a simulated user interface.<>

A support tool for systems that manage a diagrammatic interface, called the Diagram Server, is discussed. The major types of cognitive processes are reviewed. It is shown how an understanding of these processes can lead to straightforward design solutions for visual programming and visual interface problems. A method for integrating cognitive and software engineering is presented. An example of the application of this method to the design and evaluation of a visual language for acquisition of task knowledge is given. Conclusions are drawn and future work is sketched out.<>

An efficient parser for analyzing visual sentences that is based on the theory of fuzzy sets is described. The fuzzy parser selects the most reasonable parse tree for a visual sentence. The parser has been incorporated into the SIL visual language compiler. Experimental results are reported. A model which uses fuzzy theory to represent and analyze the reasonableness of derivation trees is given.<>
