Getting cats and dogs through the shelter and onto the next stage of their lives is understandably the main thing shelter staff and volunteers are focused on, and adoption events are one way to make this happen. However, adoption events are complex and can be challenging, This article introduces ways to solve common problems using interviews with people who have, and who have chosen not to, run adoption events with their shelter or rescue group.

The story I had wanted to share on my Facebook page and website was about how clicker training and desensitization/counter-conditioning led Zathras to overcome his behavior challenges at vet appointments. I had wanted to share the joys of progress, to encourage others to consider using these methods for similar behavior challenges with their own cats (or to hire me to help). Instead, clicker training Zathras became about something different: It became about love and connection, joy and discovery, and — at times — about a way to encourage him to eat.

Resilience is an individual’s ability to recover from and resist the negative effects of stress. Understanding the physiological and behavioral bases for higher levels of resilience can help animal trainers and behavior consultants develop interventions that build and maintain resilience. This article introduces a framework for resilience-building interventions, called The Resilience Rainbow.

Most people who add a dog to their family are excited to see their dog play with canine friends. Not every dog is a paragon of social skills, however, so it is important for trainers to be able to show their clients how to recognize signs of impolite play. With a few simple and lighthearted examples, trainers and behavior consultants can show people who are new to sharing their lives with dogs how to get ahead of potential problems and enjoy a happy and playful experience.

Animal shelters were significantly impacted by the covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Among other issues, lockdowns meant that animal shelters could no longer rely on their volunteers in the same way. As communities begin to reopen and shelters start to recover, they must find ways to restore their volunteer program. This article discusses how one facility, The Potter League for Animals in Rhode Island, is meeting that challenge.
(The Potter League for Animals)如何应对这一挑战。

The round-pen training technique, popular among proponents of “natural horsemanship” is said to be effective and ethical because it uses equine ethology to induce desired behaviors. This review looks at what we know about ethology and illustrates the ways this technique is aversive to horses, and how it is based on a flawed understanding of horse behavior.
