This work aims to present a proposal that combines semantic web and metaheuristic strategies to recommend web-based Learning Objects (LO) according to learners' preferences. The idea is to create a content recommendation process that uses existing resources from the Web to recommend LO in virtual learning environments. In this approach, knowledge level and Learning Styles are considered in the student model. Preliminary results have shown the possibility of creation and personalized recommendation using Wikipedia contents. At the end, some questions according to the recommendation process and the web content should be answered.

This paper contains the results of the process of checking the comprehensibility of a self-report questionnaire, called Self-Testing Questionnaire for Reading Difficulties in Adults (ADDA by its abbreviation in Spanish), to detect university students with reading-writing difficulties in Colombian universities. It describes the step of the selection, design, and implementation of the ADDA that was used for this pilot study, in which students from two virtual universities participated: EAN University and Santo Tomas University. The aim is to identify the potentialities of the ADDA for the detection of learning difficulties in the Colombian context. Two studies were performed to check and adapt ADDA. The first study was carried out with two professionals in languages and six expert teachers (focus group) in education, psychology, mathematics, linguistics, and technology. The second one was developed with 30 first year students from different academic programs from both universities. Results show that ADDA can be applied in the Colombian context.

Artificial Intelligence Planning (AIP) is a technique that can be used to customize and automate one or more stages of the teaching process, in order to provide customized pedagogical recommendations. In order to investigate the advances, challenges and limitations of this technique in this scenario, this paper presents a Systematic Review of Literature (SRL), whose results allowed to observe that the recommendation of personalized learning paths are the main pedagogical actions addressed. In this regard, we also note that it is important to advance the research in this area, proposing a better refinement in the modeling of the learner, besides expanding the universe of recommended pedagogical actions.

Learning support systems explore several audio-visual resources to consider individual needs and learning styles aiming to stimulate learning experiences. However, the large amount of educational content in different formats and the possibility of making them available in a fragmented way turns difficult the tasks of accessing these resources and understanding the concepts under study. Although literature has proposed approaches to explore explicit semantic representation through artifacts such as ontologies in learning support systems, this research line still requires further investigation efforts. In this paper, we propose a method for recommending educational content by exploring the use of semantic annotations over textual transcriptions from video lessons. Our investigation addresses the difficulties in extracting entities from natural language texts as subtitles of videos. We report on major challenges to achieve the representation of video transcriptions as semantic annotations for automatic recommendation of educational content

Learning Analytics (LA) is concerned with the use of data resulting from students' interaction with Learning Management Systems (LMS) to carry out analyses that can help students and teachers to understand and evaluate the learning process. However, several works on the subject only expose future expectations of what LA applications can perform. Thus, this paper aims at finding out practical results of LA and if its use has improved teaching and learning.

The project presented here was developed to complement the process of teaching the content of sugar production technology that is part of several courses in the area of Agroindustry. One of the objectives is to overcome some learning difficulties as basic concepts of that content. Guided by a qualitative approach research-action, a bibliographic research, on mechanisms for learning virtual objects and digital games development, and a technical study about the FazGame tool, an on-line platform for creating and sharing educational narration games, were carried out, besides the observation of two group of Agroindustry course playing the game. Our analysis shows that FazGame tool is interesting for student's motivation, and it is easy to use even by people outside the computing area. But it needs more technical advances such as font size control and about the intuitiveness of its use, among other characteristics discussed in the following text.

This paper presents an approach for the application of clustering algorithms to uncover computer programming learning profiles by using evidence extracted from source code metrics. A system for automatic assessment of programming activities featuring capture of source code metrics was developed, in order to build a dataset containing metrics extracted from programs developed by beginners in a computing course. The dataset was submitted to three clustering algorithms. The results were promising when clustering students according to these indicators using the K-means algorithm.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common mental disorder that begins in childhood and can continue through adolescence and adulthood. It makes it hard for a child to focus and pay attention. The present work is mainly designed to predict the probable region of brain that shows abnormality due to ADHD syndrome. EEG data of non – ADHD and ADHD study participants of age group 4-17 years has been collected following a protocol which contains 4 events. Eyes close, Eyes open, Visual Cue and Motor activity. Single map analysis and Frequency map analysis is performed. Comparative analysis is carried out between the non – ADHD and ADHD paricipants.3-D plotting of the EEG signals is performed for ease of visualization. Neural network algorithm is used to distinguish between non – ADHD and ADHD participants for the same task performed. Higher power and higher standard deviation is found in the ADHD patients when eyes closed, eyes open and in motor activity, which is an indication of hyper active nature. However, in the non – ADHD participants, all the parameters show significantly lower values. The proposed work can be used for assessment of learning capability of ADHD affected children and based on which, new methodology or techniques of teaching can be adopted to enhance their learning capability.

The aim of this study was to investigate the attitude of learners toward an augmented reality learning activity designed to help engineering students to solve an electromagnetic problem. The sample was 122 students. Students were asked to complete a survey questionnaire based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) enhanced with perceived enjoyment items. The results of the evaluation show that intention of use the system is dependent of perceived enjoyment but not from perceived usefulness of the learning tool.

The programming teaching in the primary education is a paramount necessity. However, learning computational concepts has several challenges. In this scope, this study evaluates the application of game programming teaching video classes with students of K-12 education. In this context, a case study was conducted in the second semester of 2015 with 60 students that have participated in an online game programming challenge and the results suggest that the adoption of the proposed strategy is beneficial to the programming learning and can help attract new talent to computing and work the vocational awakening of young people.
