The Mossbauer spectroscopy has been applied to powder and single crystal samples of KFeF 3 between 4.2 K and 300 K. Thin slices of the single crystals with the {111} and {110} plane stressed along the respective plane were used to determine the orientation of the hyperfine field H h f and the principal axes of the EFG tensors ( X , Y , Z ). H h f and Z are parallel to the [111] direction between T N =112 K and ∼65 K. Below ∼65 K a rotation of the principal axes of the EFG tensors takes place. Below T c =41 K ( T c is defined in the text) H h f is still parallel to the [111] direction within 5° but the principal axis Z of the EFG tensors lies in the (1bar10) plane and makes an angle θ (40° at 4.2 K) to the [111] direction. The magnetization has been also measured for a single crystal between 4.2 K and 300 K. The weak ferromagntic moment parallel to the direction was observed below T c . A spin arrangement below T c has been proposed.

The phase transition of NaNO 3 crystal associated with the ordering of the orientation of NO 3 - ion has been investigated by X-ray scattering. The experimental results have been analyzed on a microscopic basis to obtain pair interactions between NO 3 - ions. The results are summarized as follows. (i) The ellipsoidal distribution of critical diffuse scattering in the reciprocal space is explained by taking the pair interactions up to second nearest neighbours. (ii) The temperature dependence of critical scattering gives a reasonable agreement with theoretical values in random phase approximation in the temperature range of T > T c +4.5 K. (iii) Both the temperature dependence of long range order parameter and of anomalous lattice expansion can be satisfactorily explained by taking the strain dependence of pair interaction energy into account.

The composition and decomposition of M centers in additively colored KCl crystals have been examined by the thermal procedures. When a crystal is kept at a temperature between 320°K and 480°K after quenching from about 870°K or after F light irradiation at room temperature, to produce excess M centers, the growth or bleaching of the M band is found to proceed in accordance with a bimolecular reaction, by which the F 2 model of the M center is supported. From the rate constant of the reaction the mean activation energies for the jump of an F center and for the dissociation of an M center are obtained as 0.94 ev and 1.11 ev, respectively. The binding energy of an M center is estimated as 0.18 ev from the mean value of those obtained from the temperature dependence of the thermal equilibrium constant for (F{rightleftarrows}M) and from the difference between the dissociation energy of an M center and the jump energy of an F center.
