This chapter examines the place of practices, and particularly historical practices, in Historical International Relations (HIR). It identifies three possible meanings of the notion: practices of the past, practices laden with the past, and practices that withstand the test of time. The chapter further observes that the practice turn, in its dominant manifestations, does not necessarily have all that much to offer to Historical International Relations. There is potential, however, in the elaboration of a Durkheimian research program centred on the examination of historical practices of the third kind: practices that withstand the test of time. The main benefit of studying such fundamental practices for Historical International Relations would be to foster a more explicit recognition of us sharing our humanity – good and bad – with the people that we study and the people that surround us.

This paper critically surveys recent developments in the subfield of Historical International Relations (IR). It looks at the evolution of Historical IR as a particular approach to the study of IR, and examines its development through competing approaches offered by contemporary scholars. The paper suggests that this subfield provides an insightful and innovative branch of scholarship in contemporary IR, which can pave the way to new futures of the discipline. In particular, the chapter explores in depth the various interactions between Historical IR and International Political Thought (IPT), which has recently gained greater prominence in the discipline of History. The paper argues that the dialogue between these two approaches to the study of the international – Historical IR and IPT – can be mutually enriching, but also embodies some methodological limits. Finally, the paper offers some ways forward in the intersection of Historical IR and IPT.

Disciplinary International Relations (IR) grew in part out of the discipline of History. Even so, the subfield of Historical International Relations (HIR) is a relatively new one. In this introduction, the authors start by presenting the overall trajectory of historical work in the IR discipline, how it was central to the founding of scholarly IR but was somewhat marginalised during the Cold War, and how it has had a gradual resurgence since the 1980s, gaining steam around the turn of the century. As detailed in recent IR historiography, the Anglo-American discipline of IR grew out of a number of different academic traditions, including colonial administration, international law, history and political science. Thinking of HIR of course immediately brings up debates about the relations between History and IR. Handbooks come in many different shapes and forms. As the various disciplinary traditions, topics of study and areas show, HIR is far from being a monolithic field or approach.

This paper discusses the issue of the relationship of history and memory. Memory becomes a topic in historical discourses as it deals with identity, especially when we speak of collective memory. The paper presents the history of the relationship of history and memory and suggests a thesis according to which the close interaction between these two concepts can solve the crisis of identity that has been most urgent in our days.
