Virtual PON assignment for fixed-mobile convergent access-aggregation networks 固定移动融合接入汇聚网络的虚拟PON分配

TWDM PON is a promising candidate to become the backhauling infrastructure of Fixed Mobile Converged (FMC) access-aggregation networks. One of the main features of a FMC network is that different types of traffic (that support, e.g., fixed and mobile network services) are transported over the same infrastructure, and the coexistence of different traffic types poses complex challenges in terms of capacity assignment as well as traffic management. If TWDM is the technology of choice, one question naturally raises: is it better to isolate different types of traffic over different wavelengths (i.e., Layer-1 convergence) or to share wavelength capacities among the different traffic types (i.e., Layer-2 convergence)? In the first case, to isolate the different types of traffic, we can assign logically-separated Virtual PONs (VPONs) to different traffic types, that will operate on disjoint sets of wavelengths. In the second case, different traffic types can share the same wavelengths in the network (i.e., a single convergent TWDM PON is used). We first model the problem resorting to a modified version of the classical bin packing problem. Then, through both numerical and qualitative considerations, we investigate the trade-offs between the two options under different scenarios in terms of traffic loads, user distribution, and network capacity.

Multilayer flex-grid network planning 多层柔性电网规划

The traffic in metro and core networks is forecasted to grow in volume but also in dynamicity, and the inefficiency of WDM optical networks drove research efforts on flex-grid technologies. Flex-grid networks support variable spectrum connections as a way to increase spectral efficiency and support future transmission rates. In addition, the use of flexible transponders further increases the flexibility of such networks, bringing closer the optical and the IP layers. The joint planning and operation of both layers becomes crucial to reduce the capital and operational costs. To this end, in this paper we examine the planning problem of a multilayer (ML) flex-grid network from the perspective of capital expenditure taking into account modular IP/MPLS routers at the optical network edges along with tunable optical transponders. We propose a concise ILP formulation that jointly solves the ML planning problem. The formulation is quite generic and can be used for flex- and fixed-grid networks employing flexible or fixed transponders.

CAPEX/OPEX benefits of alien wavelengths for the next generation optical internet 下一代光学互联网的外来波长的资本支出/运营成本效益

Standard operational practice mandates deploying expensive transponders at the borders between transport network domains. While this provides service guarantees, it also brings high service cost and increased end-to-end delay for the traffic. Deploying open WDM interfaces, often referred to as Alien Wavelengths, is one solution to overcome these drawbacks. This article provides an overview of the development of the Alien Wavelength technology to date. CAPEX and OPEX savings examples are provided together with an extensive analysis of the application of the open WDM interfaces for supporting the future optical Internet and its demanding applications. Our analysis indicates up to 60% savings in deployment cost and up to 70% savings in power consumption for hight bit-rate services deployed via open WDM interfaces.

Influence of software and hardware failures with imperfect fault coverage on PONs OPEX 故障覆盖不完全的软硬件故障对PONs OPEX的影响

Passive Optical Networks (PONs) are one of the preferred technologies to deploy broadband access networks. As time passes, end users presuppose network connectivity to be always available, and expect PONs to be highly dependable. Yet operators, from an economic view, are interested in the costs related to failures. Thus, PONs dependability and associated costs have been extensively studied, but only focusing on hardware failures. Contrarily, this paper performs a thorough analysis of the impact of software failures in failure-related costs. Based on real empirical data, software failures are thoroughly characterized and classified in four different categories according to their severity. Also, the effect of software failures on the behavior of PON's fiber protection and recovery mechanisms is detailed. Software failures are included into a Markov cost model, implementing a comprehensive cost framework. This way, the dependability-related costs of PONs are analyzed, accounting for hardware and software failures, as well as for the consequences of software failures on well-known PON protection mechanisms. Moreover, how the testing phase duration and user profile (residential or business) impact these costs is pinpointed.

5G radio access network and its requirements on mobile optical network 5G无线接入网及其对移动光网络的要求

Toward the realization of the 5th generation (5G) mobile communication network that offers super high bit rates and capacity, a further enhancement of the mobile optical network to support 5G radio access technologies is indispensable. At first, this paper briefly summarizes the concept of 5G radio access network based on the Phantom Cell concept in which small cells that offer super high bit rate transmission using higher frequency bands and wider bandwidth are overlapped onto macro cells that support coverage and mobility, and the radio links corresponding to User (U)-plane and (C)-plane are separately supported by small cells and macro cells, respectively. Next, technical issues and requirements on the mobile optical network for supporting 5G radio access technologies are discussed, focusing on massive MIMO and carrier aggregation.

Non-linear impairment modeling for flexgrid network and its application in offline network equipment upgrade strategy 柔性电网的非线性损伤建模及其在网络设备离线升级策略中的应用

This paper describes a comprehensive network model which sufficiently captures the noise impairments in the physical layer due to in-line EDFA amplifiers, non-linear impairments in optical links and noise at the network nodes due to lossy ROADMs for dispersion uncompensated transmission systems. The model builds upon the LOGON strategy, helps in modularizing the contribution of noise by the ROADMs and optical links and thereby making it suitable to use for network management and planning purposes. Further, the model was used to analyze critical configuration zones where improved OSNR conditions at the ROADMs result in increasing network capacity by 4.5 to 5 Tbps. Lastly, using this model an offline strategy is suggested for adding in-line EDFAs that has a potential to help service providers demonstrating capacity benefits of procuring addition equipment upfront. The results show that at the OSNR limit this strategy can improve the day one network capacity by 36% for the BT UK network when 10% blocking is reached.

Efficient label encoding in segment-routing enabled optical networks 在支持分段路由的光网络中有效的标签编码

The currently standardized GMPLS protocol suite for packet over optical networks relies on hierarchical instances of signaling sessions. Such sessions have to be established and maintained also in transit nodes, leading to complex and weighty control plane implementations. A novel technology called Segment Routing (SR) has been recently proposed to address these issues. SR relies on the source routing paradigm to provide traffic engineering solutions. In particular, the computed route for a given request is expressed as a segment list applied as an header to data packets at the ingress node. Specific algorithms are then required to perform the path computation and express the computed path through an effective segment list encoding (i.e., label stack), minimizing the segment list depth (SLD) (i.e., the number of labels included in the segment list). So far, no algorithms have been proposed to jointly provide path and segment list computation in SR-based networks. In this study, an efficient segment list encoding algorithm is proposed, guaranteeing optimal path computation and limited SLD in SR-based networks. The algorithm also accounts for equal-cost multiple paths and multiple constraints. The proposed algorithm is successfully applied to different network scenarios, demonstrating its flexibility in several use cases and showing effective performance in terms of segment list depth and introduced packet overhead.

Blocking performance of cost efficient integrated OTN/WDM metropolitan networks in static traffic scenario 静态流量场景下低成本OTN/WDM城域网的阻塞性能

We propose a low complexity and integrated OTN/ WDM switching architecture for metropolitan networks and realized in electronic technology. The proposed switch is scalable and composed by small capacity OTN switches and one space switch. The architecture reduces the number of OTN switches with respect to other solutions proposed in literature with the consequence of optimizing the used OTN switching resources and the complexity of the space switch. To study the impact on the blocking performance of the reduced number of OTN switches, we introduce an Integer Linear Problem that models the routing and switch resource assignment problem in a network equipped with the proposed switches. Being the problem NPhard, an heuristic is proposed to evaluate the network request blocking in static traffic scenario. The obtained results show how a reduction in OTN switches to as small as 50% can be reached when the percentage of traffic needing sub-wavelength switching is 40%.

The rapid emergence of new network scenarios and architectures, such as Data Centers Networks (DCNs), Path Computation Element (PCE), and Software Defined Networking (SDN), has refreshed some on-line routing-related problems, objective of many research efforts in the past. As a result, new scalable and efficient path computation algorithms are required to address particular characteristics and demands of on-line scenarios, such as those brought by inaccurate Network State Information (NSI), strongly affecting the overall blocking probability. In this paper, we propose a prediction-based PCE scheme, referred to as PPCE. PPCE is devised for highly dynamic network scenarios, aiming at reducing the amount of signaling messages as well as the blocking probability.
