Long-range communications in licence-exempt TV white spaces: An introduction to Soft-Licence concept 免许可证电视空白区域中的远程通信:软许可证概念介绍

Spectrum deregulation in wireless industry along with advancements in Cognitive Radio (CR) technology has opened up opportunities to access under-utilised spectral bands such as TV White Spaces (TVWS). Certain services in TVWS would require access to spectrum which is predictable, measurable and offer a higher degree of certainty currently difficult under the license-exempt model. This paper introduces a novel light-touch regulatory model called as `Soft-Licence' which sits between the current exclusive-license and license-exempt spectrum models and offers the required service protection from license-exempt secondary systems and provides a fine balance between enabling efficient use of spectrum and encouragement to service providers to deploy infrastructure based on shared TVWS spectrum. To complete the discussion, a commercial model based on separation of White Space connectivity and White Space retail service under the Soft-Licence concept is proposed.

Energy and throughput tradeoff in temporal spectrum sharing 时间频谱共享中能量和吞吐量的权衡

It is envisaged that diverse types of short-range wireless systems coexist in shared spectrum in a near future. For low-power systems, throughput and energy efficiency are two design objectives that often conflict with each other. In this paper, we investigate the tradeoff between the throughput and the energy efficiency for a data-hungry but battery-driven low-power network which opportunistically shares radio spectrum in temporal domain. We provide a mathematical framework that determines the optimum frame lengths for the different objectives, and analyze the tradeoff. To this purpose, we propose an energy consumption model that reflects the characteristics of low-power transceivers including power consumption at the receiver side. Numerical results show that the optimum frame length for energy efficiency results in significant loss in throughput, and vice versa. This suggests that the transmission duration of the opportunistic network should be chosen depending on the prime system objective.

Bayesian approach to spectrum sensing for cognitive radio applications 认知无线电应用中频谱感知的贝叶斯方法

In this paper, we address the spectrum sensing task of cognitive radio from Bayesian detection (BD) perspective. We first show that BD essentially simplifies to classical energy detection (ED) under Gaussian signal assumption but the threshold setting has more degrees of freedom to optimize the sensing performance, e.g., against given spectrum utilization. Then we propose a novel BD based algorithm where the sample energy is calculated iteratively, and the odds ratio is used to quantify the measurement reliability. Depending on the reliability, either a hard decision is forced or the algorithm progresses to accumulate more sample energy. When working under unknown SNRs, this allows the detector to reach reliable sensing decisions by using adaptive sample window, thus providing advantage over classical ED where fixed threshold is used regardless of channel conditions. Extensive computer simulations are provided to illustrate the performance advantages against classical ED in terms of e.g. sensing time.

Impact of deployment costs and spectrum prices on the business viability of mobile broadband using TV white space 部署成本和频谱价格对使用电视空白空间的移动宽带业务可行性的影响

In this paper we analyze the business feasibility of mobile broadband access services using secondary access of spectrum in the TV bands. We use a capacity-cost analysis considering costs for radio equipment, base station sites and radio spectrum. We compare network deployment by a market entrant and an existing mobile operator using either licensed spectrum or TV white spaces. In addition, we compare the impact of high and low spectrum prices using examples from Sweden and India. The analysis shows that market entrants will be in a more difficult position than the established actors. No matter the cost-capacity performance of cognitive radio equipment, a new operator needs to invest in a new infrastructure with sites and transmission. If the spectrum costs are “high” (like in India) the use of TW white spaces is more cost efficient for both existing operators and new operators.

Business opportunities using white space spectrum and cognitive radio for mobile broadband services 利用白色空间频谱和认知无线电为移动宽带服务提供商机

In this paper we consider business feasibility analysis of systems and services using cognitive radio and secondary use of spectrum. The approach is generally applicable to business analysis of services using “new” technology but the analysis is focused on cellular use of TV white space. The paper describes what can be learnt from history when mobile technologies have been introduced in the market. New services introduced by new actors are challenging since the market entrant need to invest in infrastructure and marketing and to build up a customer base. Hence the role and position of existing actors and services need to be considered. Promising business cases for mobile broadband services using cognitive radio and secondary spectrum access are presented for both wide area and local area systems. The difference between wide and local area network deployment and business are analyzed providing implications for future local area wireless systems.

The LAD methods in WLAN indoor multipath channels 无线局域网室内多径信道的LAD方法

Spectrum sensing can be used to find free channels in cognitive radio systems. The localization algorithm based on double-thresholding (LAD) signal detection methods have been proposed to be used for spectrum sensing. Even though being widely studied, the performance of the LAD methods has not been studied in realistic channels. In this paper, ETSI BRAN/WLAN channel models B and C are used to study the performance of the LAD methods in the presence of realistic multipath, fading and Doppler effects in order to get statistical information about their performance. Measurements at the WLAN bands verify that the LAD methods have a good performance even in multipath situations.

Always one/zero malicious user detection in cooperative sensing using the FCME method 基于FCME方法的协同感知中总是1 / 0恶意用户检测

In cognitive radio (CR) systems, cooperative sensing is advantageous when compared to single user detection. Cooperative sensing means that multiple CRs detect the spectrum holes collaboratively. The presence of malicious users (MU) can severely degrade the performance of cooperative CR system. In this paper, we are adopting a signal detection method called the forward consecutive mean excision (FCME) algorithm for `always one/zero' MU detection in cooperative sensing. Simulation results show that the FCME method is able to work even though 80% of the secondary users are `always one' MUs.

Enhanced energy detector via algebraic approach for spectrum sensing in cognitive radio networks 基于代数方法的认知无线电网络频谱感知增强能量检测器

This paper1 deals with spectrum sensing techniques used to efficient utilization of limited spectrum resource. The most used technique is the energy detector as it is the simplest one for real time implementation and performs well for high SNR. This paper is concerned with this well known method and introduces an enhanced energy detector, in order to enhance its performance in low SNR. The proposed detector is based on the algebraic approach used for spike location, to make the detection more robust in a noisy environment. The proposed system model introduces an algebraic preprocessing bloc to attenuate the noise effect and enhance the detector performance at lower SNR. The detection is achieved by a second bloc that implements the conventional energy detection method. Simulation results, performed on DVB-T signals in additive Gaussian noisy context, show that the proposed detector performs much better than the conventional energy detector.

The proposed system model introduces an algebraic preprocessing bloc to attenuate the noise effect and enhance the detector performance at lower SNR. The detection is achieved by a second bloc that implements the conventional energy detection method. Estimation of time-domain calibration parameters to restore MIMO-TDD channel reciprocity 估计时域校准参数以恢复MIMO-TDD通道互易性

Spatial interweave cognitive radio opportunistically exploits spatial holes to enable transmission of secondary systems. The latter form carefully aligned spatial beams so that there is no interference to the primary system. This requires acquisition of the (spatio-temporal) channel state (CS) between the secondary emitter and the primary receiver. CS can be acquired by using a multi-input multi-output time-division-duplex (MIMO-TDD) setup thanks to channel reciprocity inherent in such systems. Unfortunately, global reciprocity is often jeopardized by the nonreciprocal radio frequency front-ends (RF) at the two ends of the link. Restoration of reciprocity to compensate for the RF calls for on-line (and hence low complexity) calibration parameters estimation. In this paper, we propose an approach to estimate the space-time-domain parameters restoring the channel reciprocity in a frequency selective MIMO-TDD context. Accounting for antenna coupling effects, we find accurate space-time-domain calibration parameters and demonstrate real-time calibration process in an OFDM system.

Guaranteed service and delay-constrained capacity of a multi-channel cognitive secondary network 多通道认知二级网络的服务保障和时延约束容量

In this paper, we consider a multi-channel cognitive radio system serving a primary network and a secondary network, and analyze the quality of service and delay-constrained capacity of the secondary network. Specifically, by assuming that a certain amount of resource is exclusively reserved and used on each channel by the primary network, we derive the traffic transportation capacity that is guaranteed to the secondary network. Based on this, we analyze the traffic delay distribution in the secondary network and derive an upper bound on it, which allows us to further obtain a guaranteed capacity of the secondary network in serving traffic with probabilistic delay requirement. Both numerical and simulation results are presented for an example where the secondary network traffic follows a model taken from 3GPP LTE. The delay distribution, average delay and delay-constrained capacity of the secondary network are compared. The excellent match between analytical results and simulation results validates the theoretical analysis.
