A) Is there a need for cohesive ocean observations for all marine operations? • The group has difficulty determining exactly what was meant by “cohesive” observations and what “all marine operations” really meant. • After some discussion the consensus was that within most interpretations, the answer to the question is YES. • The group then described two stipulations to the YES answer: o If there is an ability to work as a global community that supports interoperability (the statement was made that politics clearly plays a role) o If there is a way to facilitate interchangeable sensor modalities or components, which depends on an ability to standardize formats and Interface Control Documents.

Electrical resistance is a proxy for temperature. Conductivity + Temperature + Pressure are used to CALCULATE salinity. Fluorescence is used as a proxy for chlorophyl and even phytoplankton abundance but with major caveats based on population structure, quenching, etc. The more unconstrained proxies you have the further you go from a rigorous end result.
