Solar spectra have been recorded from 3.05 to 3.70µm by means of a balloon borne monochromator at an altitude of 35 km and for solar zenith distances from 75° to 95°. Absorptions due to CH4 and H2O are identified as well as 03 bands observed for the first time in the atmosphere. Upper limits for the stratospheric mixing ratios of NO2 and HCHO are deduced.

The effect of thermal diffusion on the vertical distribution of helium in the heterosphere is discussed. It is shown that an increase in the helium concentration of 1 .4 to 2.4 at the thermopause level, due to thermal diffusion, leads to atmospheric densities explaining the observed drag of the satellite Echo 1.

The properties of the heterosphere are discussed in terms of the behaviour of scale heights and their gradients. The height variation of the mean molecular mass leads to important gradients of scale heights in the isothermal region of the heterosphere. An analysis of the atmospheric scale height H and the density scale height Hρ which increase with altitude shows that H ≥ Hρ everywhere. Their positive gradients β and βρ may have all possible values between 0 and 1.5. The gradient βρ is not less than β in the thermosphere, but may be greater or less than β in the isothermal region depending on the thermopause temperature.
