This chapter begins with non-medical prescribing and the practical aspects of making NHS prescription forms, the dispensing of medication, administration, and what to do in case of errors. It then describes medicine concordance and adherence, and patient involvement in decisions about medicines. Circumstances in which patients may be eligible for reduced fees or free medicines are listed. The competency framework for all prescribers is included, as well as guidance on how to write a prescription. Prescribing for special groups that may have different reactions to drugs is explained. Principles of medication reviews are outlined, followed by the governance, prescription, and administration of controlled drugs. The chapter also includes information on antimicrobial stewardship and the storage, transportation, and disposal of medicines.
