The development of a Ku-band receiver front-end using microwave integrated circuit technology is described. The front end elements, including a GaAs FET RF balanced amplifier stage, an image reject mixer, and a varactor controlled GaAs FET oscillator are integrated in a very small simple hermetic package. Electrical design details are presented for the varactor controlled FET oscillator development.

This paper describes a new microwave amplitude limiter with low AM-to-PM conversion using a class A GaAs FET amplifier. It has been experimentally established that this limiter is applicable for use with 200 Mbits/sec 4-phase PSK signals or 2700-channel FDM-FM signals.

The temperature-dependent light scattering properties of cholesteric liquid crystals are used as both the sensing and indicating mechanism in a calorimetric radiation monitor. The liquid crystals are arranged on two dielectric disks; one is a plain dielectric and the other is metal coated. While both disks will respond to general changes in ambient conditions, the metallized disk will also have a temperature change due to absorbed radiation. Thus, the difference between the temperatures of the two disks, as indicated by the liquid crystals, is a measure of radiation. Experimental models are described and the results of tests at 2.45 GHz for power densities of from 1 to 15 mW/cm/sup 2/ are presented.

Design equations are derived for matched microstrip equalizers which provide a specified gain at three passband frequencies and present a good match to both source and load. Design examples compare measured results to theoretical predictions, and the application of matched equalizers to microwave amplifier design is discussed.

A time-domain technique for the measurement of return loss, attenuation and coupling loss of leaky coaxial cables is described. The technique is based on a simple signal flow graph procedure where the leaky cable is represented by a three-port network, with the third port being introduced to represent the leakage from the cable. The measurement procedure is described, while experimental results for three different leaky coaxial cables are presented and compared with frequency-domain data.

A computer-aided tuning procedure for microwave circuits - especially multituned narrow-band branching filters - has been developed. The mistuning of all elements after pretuning in a straight forward manner is small enough, thus a specially chosen network function depends nearly linear on the deviations of the tuning screws from their proper positions. These linearized relations and the regular values of the network function can be calculated from the equivalent circuit of the filter with the help of a large computer. They can then be inserted into the small computer of the measurement set-up. The appropriate changes of the tuning elements for sufficient performance of the filter together with clear tuning criteria for the operator are computed from the test values of the pretuned filter. The procedure will be repeated several times, because of the only quasi-linear relations between the deviations of the tuning elements from their proper position and the special network function.
