As the fall 2017 national debate on Confederate monuments and memorials demonstrated, it is clear that students need a solid foundation in history based on truth and clear, documented facts, unfettered by stereotypes or bias. For North Carolina students, the development of this foundation can be supported by the efforts of both school librarians and public librarians in sharing resources to gain accurate information. This article will share resources and ideas for school and public librarians to consider in support of students and patrons.

Libraries and writers are natural partners. In the Spring semester of 2016, the Z. Smith Reynolds Library hosted 33 student authors who applied to attend at an overnight event known as “Writers Camp @ ZSR”. These students were paired with University artifacts from the Library’s Special Collections to serve as writing prompts, fueled with endless coffee, and offered editorial support from graduate assistants in the Writing Center-- culminating in the publication of a unique collection of student-authored literary works, cataloged by the Library and published by the Library Partners Press in multiple formats. This project, now a biennial event, has helped the Library bring together a community of authors, supporting the scholarly pursuits of these students outside the classroom.

The circumstances of the first meeting of an adult educator, Elizabeth C. Morriss, a widow, from North Carolina in her mid-fifties, with a librarian, Edna Phillips, a single woman, from Massachusetts in her mid-forties, were most promising. Both were active in their respective fields, Morriss in the field of adult elementary education, and Phillips in the field of library adult education. Despite their years of experience, they were both pursuing degrees in Adult Education from Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City, probably to get credentials that would certify them as recognized leaders in their field.
