The specter of Freemasonry haunted the Spanish Empire since the mid-18 th century. Although this kind of sociability was not efficiently implemented until Napoleon’s invasion, anti-masonic publications made an early appearance in the Iberian Peninsula and from there into its colonies. Afterwards, with the arrival of the revolution, the specter of Freemasonry was used as an explanation for the political change and as one of the axis of reactionary discourses against liberalism. Thus, our objective is to analyze the circulation of anti-masonic writings in the European era of the Enlightment, specifically the hispanic production and its mutation during the revolutionary period. In order to do so we have studied the works of authors such as Jose Torrubia and Lorenzo Hervas y Panduro, as well as the vast press production belonging to the period between 1810 and 1830 on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Grand Orient of Italy has often crossed the Italian borders to found lodges in other countries. In this paper we describe and analyse the depth and impact of Italian Freemasonry in the Ottoman Empire, that after 1923 became the Republic of Turkey. What is of the utmost importance is the Italian tendency to mix with the local population to such an extent that the Italian community was not perceived as an alien body but rather as complementary part of the host country.

This unpublished research on the socio-occupational relations and origins of the Uruguayan masons of the 19th century aims to reveal the social bases of Uruguay’s Freemasonry. The main documentary sources used were extracted from the main archives of the country together with internal documents of Freemasonry. The structure of the work revolves around the study of three periods, analyzing the nationality, occupations, geographical distribution of lodges and predominance of certain groups in the masonic workshops in order to try to answer the following question: who really integrated freemasonry in 19th Century Uruguay?

Con un suspiro de alivio nos adentramos en un libro que nos presenta a mujeres liberadas del corsee/andamiaje del parafraseo constante de documentos, testimonios y demas pruebas que requiere un escrito de visibilizacion historica. Solamente una historiadora que ya maneja y comunica los datos en una variedad de contextos academicos, puede tener la destreza de no solo retratar quienes eran, sino ademas como eran estas cinco masonas.Como indica el titulo estas mujeres compartieron un contexto temporal politico social; el de la II Republica, y su variable era la masoneria. De hecho, el aspecto masonico es el unico apartado en comun que tiene cada una de ellas. Tenian profesiones distintas, aunque pudieran haber coincidido y de hecho lo hicieron, en algun momento dado. Carmen de Burgos: periodista, Clara Campoamor: abogada, Consuelo Berges; escritora y traductora, Hildegart Rodriguez Caballera; politica; Aurora Bertrana I Salazar; musico y escritora.Tambien las hubo que fueron amigas entre ellas.Sin olvidarnos de su feminismo, Carmen de Burgos lucho por una ley de divorcio, Hidelgart advocaba por la contracepcion y el aborto, Clara Campoamor consiguio que se aprobase el derecho al sufragio de la mujer mientras que Berges tenia inclinaciones anarquistas. This biographical note aims to reflect on some aspects of the military doctor and colonel, Urbano Orad y Gajias’s life. He is a leading figure in the history of the Military Health of Spain. He fought in the wars of Cuba and North Africa, at the turn of the 20th century, and earned the highest military reward granted in Spain. We have also studied his relationship with Freemasonry, his reformist ideas and his active participation in important socio-cultural events such as the Second Congress of Africanist (Zaragoza, 1908). In addition, we have compared his biography with other prominent figures from the same period. They combined their reformism and critical spirit with a high sense of Spanish patriotism, in an environment marked by Spain’s 1898 regeneration movement.

The tradition has it that on 24 June 1717 four masonic lodges in London in a meeting at the Goose and Gridiron near St Paul’s Cathedral in London established the first Grand Lodge and elected Anthony Sayer as its first Grand Master is entirely dependent on a narrative by James Anderson in the second edition of the Book of Constitutions in 1773.Anderson’s narrative contains many internal contradictions and inconsistencies. By revisiting such sources as William Stukeley’s account of his initiation in 1721 and an account of the election of the Duke of Montague as Grand Master in the records of the Lodge of Antiquity, it is argued that Grand Lodge was not created in 1717, but rather at the dinner at Stationers’ Hall in London on 24 June 1721 when the Duke of Montagu was elected Grand Master.
