While under communism the identity-providing religion was suppressed, religiosity is strong today even among the youth in post-communist countries. This provides an appropriate background to investigate how external and internal religiosity relate to risky behaviors like smoking, drinking, and drugs among the young. This study shows that not religion as such or internal religiosity, but largely observable (external) religiosity prevents them from wallowing in those vices. While this is found strongly for both males and females, those females doubting or reflecting religion show a somewhat smaller risky activity.

This paper offers a theory of decentralised, non-state-sponsored terrorism that is characteristic of contemporary reality, and that explains the rise of homegrown terrorism. We argue that the sense of social identity based on religion or shared history is a prime motivator of non-strategic terrorist activities, and we investigate its consequences and implications for defence against terrorism. Terrorist responses to perceived affronts to identity increase with altruism towards in-groups and with endogenous intensity of hate towards out-groups. We show that, while out-group spite is the more essential feature of identity pertinent to decentralised terrorism, the intensity of terrorist actions is magnified by in-group altruism because it plays an important role in overcoming the potential free-riding of terrorists. This makes individual terrorist activities possible without coordination. We use our formulation to provide an alternative explanation for why counterterrorism measures intended to deter and manage terrorism often fail, and frequently can have a backlash effect of actually increasing it. Our results point to the need for Western democracies to reformulate their foreign policies to take account of the role these policies play in instigating and managing contemporary terrorism.

Using the Survey of Household Spending from 2012 to 2015, this paper studies (1) the distributions and characteristics of giver types and (2) the determinants of religious and non-religious giving in Canada. The paper employs both multinominal logistic regression and pooled Tobit regression to re-examine the results of two earlier studies [Chan and Lee (2016). Interdisciplinary Journal of Research on Religion, 12, 1–15; Chan and Lee (2018). Atlantic Canada Economics Review, 1] and adds additional variables (e.g. geography and behavioural addiction). It summarises the most likely characteristics of each of the giver types and re-examines the determinants of religious and non-religious giving among Canadians, ultimately determining that Eastern Canadians are more likely to participate in giving, although Western Canadians give more in terms of monetary amount.
