This paper focuses on system identification for the explicit purpose of supporting modern H¿ robust control design objectives. In this analysis, the true plant is not assumed to be in the identification model set. An integrated identification/robust control problem is posed, where the optimal solution guarantees the best robust performance relative to the system information contained in a given experimental data set. A numerical example demonstrating an approximate solution to the problem indicates the usefulness of the approach.

This paper presents preliminary results from an investigation into identification of parameters appearing nonlinearly in system dynamics. After presentation of background material on identifiability of such systems, an identifier based on the Extended Luenberger Observer is constructed for a class of nonlinear systems. Conditions sufficient for global convergence of its parameter estimates are discussed.

The extended Kalman filter has been applied to a continuous styrene polymerization process with mixed initiators for the on-line state estimation and control. Two time scale filter is used with the reactor model having some inherent modeling error. The effects of measured and unmeasured disturbances, and the effect of long off-line measurement delay have been investigated. It is also shown that the filter can be used successfully for rapid polymer grade changes.

This paper presents the design, simulation and experimental evaluation of a discrete time adaptive pole placement (APP) controller for end milling. In this controller design, the specification of the reference resultant force level and maximum feedrate constraint are based on surface finish/error considerations through use of a mechanistic dynamic process model for prediction of the cutting forces and the geometry of the end milled wall and floor surfaces. In addition, an analog signal processing circuit which holds the peak resultant force signal over each spindle revolution permits application of the controller to both slot and peripheral end milling. Experimental results show good agreement with the simulated APP controller force regulation performance and surface profile geometries. The APP approach is demonstrated to be an effective control strategy whether the process zeros are stable or not.

In this paper we consider the stability of feedback systems in the presence of combined plant and controller uncertainty. We show that if a controller C stabilizes a ball of plants about a nominal plant P, where distances are measured by the gap metric, then P stabilizes a ball of controllers about C of the same radius. This reveals a certain reciprocity between the role of plant and controller in a feedback system. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for stability under simultaneous perturbations of the plant and the controller. We also introduce a weighted gap metric and discuss its application to the problem of robust stabilization of feedback systems.

We consider a system whose linear mathematical model includes uncertainties in the system state matrix and, possibly, the input connection matrix A quadratic matching condition is introduced in order to establish a new relaxed mismatch criterion, the satisfaction of which may be used to guarantee quadratic stabilizability via linear state feedback control. We show the relaxed mismatch criterion to generally be less conservative than either the measure of mismatch or the quadratic bound criteria.

In this paper a knowledge based systems approach is proposed for the improved control and operation of a fermentation plant. The system is composed of three elements; a supervisory knowledge base, a scheduling knowledge base and an on-line relational database. The supervisor is responsible for monitoring and controlling individual fermenters and is instructed when to initiate or terminate a fermentation by commands issued by the scheduler, which aims to maximise plant-wide productivity. The database provides a centralised store of information which can be retrieved on-line by both knowledge bases. The design and implementation of the proposed system is discussed with particular reference to operation in a real-time environment.

In previous works [1]-[6] methods of reducing the effects of known external waveform type disturbances on linear and nonlinear systems are given. These methods do not require that the exact magnitude or the arrival time of the deterministic disturbance be known. However, in some cases, certain disturbance model parameters need to be known. For example, the angular frequency for sinusoidal disturbances and the exponent for exponential disturbances are needed for the application of disturbance reduction techniques. In this paper, we give conditions under which disturbance models with unknown parameters can be handled.
