Energy-efficient planning and management of cellular networks 蜂窝网络的节能规划和管理

We study base stations energy-efficient management algorithms in a cellular access network taking into account different planning strategies. To provide energy savings, sleep modes are adopted at the Base Stations (BSs). We propose two switch-off strategies that are based either on the cell load or the BS coverage overlap. Our results show that energy savings between 10% and 30% can be achieved also for the deployment already planned to be energy-efficient, while even higher savings are achievable with the other deployments. Moreover, we find that both the proposed switch-off strategies obtain similar results, suggesting that the order at which the BSs are switched-off, and the set of BSs selected to be switched off, do not change significantly the average estimation of potential energy savings. Furthermore, on a realistic case study, comparisons are made between the results obtained by using deterministic channel estimation models and empirical formulations.

Securing the 802.11 MAC in MANETs: A specification-based intrusion detection engine 在manet中保护802.11 MAC:基于规范的入侵检测引擎

Specification-based detection engines share the advantages of signature-based and anomaly-based detection, since they can detect unknown attacks, without the side effects of high rates of false positives. However, such solutions for MANETs have seen limited use. This paper introduces a specification-based detection engine that is built upon the functionality and limitations of the 802.11 MAC protocol, expanding the detection range of such engines in MANETs. The proposed detection engine is deployed at each node and performs detection using a set of specifications, which describe the correct operation of the MAC protocol operating at the host node. The proposed engine introduces a number of significant advantages since it can effectively detect both known and unknown attacks in real time and with minimum overhead. Moreover, it is resilient to the dynamic topologies that are common in MANETs and its deployment requires no protocol modifications.

A dual-radio contention-based protocol for paired spectrum access and TV white space 一种基于双无线电竞争的协议,用于配对频谱接入和电视空白

Spectrum regulation for cellular networks, last-mile wireless broadband access, but also for the new secondary usage of the TV white space, often favor a paired radio spectrum so that different frequency channels are used for down- and uplink (base vs. mobile devices). This setup is also referred to as frequency division duplex. However, such a setup makes it difficult to apply contention-based protocols like those standardized by IEEE 802.11, because they were designed so that downlink and uplink share the same frequency channel. Yet the simplicity of the 802.11 protocol and its decentralized operation make it attractive for smart grid and consumer electronics applications using TV white space or licensed spectrum. Therefore we investigate a contention-based 802.11-like protocol for paired spectrum. We leverage its downlink-uplink separation into a protocol design that combines contention-based distributed medium access with a managed reaction to packet collisions. We also demonstrate why this paired spectrum approach is relevant and desirable for TV white space secondary spectrum access. The main advantages of this protocol are (1) enabling the usage of simple and low cost contention-based 802.11-like devices in paired spectrum, (2) providing collision detection management in the uplink, and (3) an inherent resource reservation for downlink traffic. The evaluation results confirm the validity of the proposed protocol design and demonstrate the benefits obtained from collision detection management.

The effect of variable wake up time on the utilization of sleep modes in femtocell mobile access networks 可变唤醒时间对飞蜂窝移动接入网中睡眠模式利用的影响

Femtocells are considered as an enabler for low power, high bit rate future mobile access networks. In this study, we look at them as a technology to cover an area with a high bit rate connectivity. From the evaluation it is clear that sleep modes are imperative to maximise the energy efficiency of the mobile access network. We evaluate the power reduction and wake up time of different sleep modes and apply them to the model in order to evaluate the influence of the power consumption of the mobile access network. We demonstrate that fast wake up times and low power sleep modes are essential in order to make femtocells a viable technology for mobile access networks.

Road Side Unit coverage extension for data dissemination in VANETs 扩大道路边单位的覆盖范围,以便在VANETs中传播数据

Data dissemination is a key component of Infotainment and safety services in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks. For infotainment services data dissemination starts from a Road Side Unit (RSU) and propagates to a multiplicity of On Board Units (OBU). A RSU typically can reach with a single hop only a fraction of the interested vehicles. Multi-hop, inter-vehicle communications is necessary to reach vehicles in the whole area that could be interested in the service. For an efficient data dissemination both the number of forwarding vehicles and the number of not covered ones shall be kept down. In this work we study the extension of the RSU coverage area via a simple data dissemination defined for urban scenarios. The proposed forwarding algorithm relies only on information local to the forwarding OBU. We show that in our case studies representing urban structures the protocol guarantees a good RSU coverage extension (in the order of 20 times the transmission area of the RSU) with a very low percentage of vehicles not reached by the disseminated data.

Management of opportunistic networks through cognitive functionalities 通过认知功能管理机会主义网络

The emerging wireless world will migrate towards an era that will comprise more local/ temporary structures for the provision of services. Opportunistic networking would be used as a networking paradigm towards this direction. Specifically, operator-governed opportunistic networks (ONs) are dynamically created, temporary, coordinated extensions of the infrastructure. Operator governance is being realized through the use of Cognitive Management Systems (CMSs) which acquire the context, policies and profiles of the environment and make decisions on the creation, maintenance or termination of opportunistic networks. This work presents an approach for elaborating on the concept of the management of opportunistic networks through cognitive functionalities. Two main CMSs are proposed namely, the Cognitive management System for the Coordination of the infrastructure (CSCI) and the Cognitive system for the Management of the Opportunistic Network (CMON). CSCIs and CMONs are making use of the common components of CMSs, i.e., the acquisition of context, policies and profiles, decision making, enforcement and learning and are used in order to manage the creation, maintenance and termination of an ON.

SINR base station placement and mobile association games under cooperation 正在合作的新新网基站布局和手机联想游戏

In this paper we study the hierarchical decision making problem of base station (BS) placement and mobile terminals association in a wireless communication system. Our approach extends previous work by considering the level of cooperation between BSs in the utility functions. We first address the problem of association of mobile terminals to the BSs, which determines the cell partition. This is studied in a non-cooperative context where, given a BSs placement, each mobile connects to the BS that provides it with the best signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR) - i.e., mobiles compete to achieve a better SINR. Then we consider the problem of determining the optimal locations of the BSs, taking into account the association behavior of the mobiles that will be induced by the location decisions. We study the problem in the general setting of a parametrized level of cooperation between BSs, showing the corresponding parametric utility functions and the resulting symmetric Nash equilibrium for the hierarchical Stackelberg-like problem.

A survey and comparison study on weighting algorithms for access network selection 接入网选择加权算法的综述与比较研究

In order to deal with problem of access network selection in the next generation wireless networks, multi attribute decision making (MADM) algorithms have been proposed. MADM algorithms, represent a promising solution to choose dynamically the optimal access network, which can satisfying the quality of service (QoS), from the available access networks technologies. One of the main problems in MADM algorithms, is determining the most suitable weights for different criteria. This paper proposes a survey and comparison study on different weighting algorithms, which allow to assign a weight for each criterion, for network selection process based on MADM algorithms.
为了解决下一代无线网络中的接入网选择问题,提出了多属性决策算法(MADM)。MADM算法为从现有的接入网技术中动态选择满足服务质量(QoS)的最优接入网提供了一种有前途的解决方案。MADM算法的主要问题之一是为不同的标准确定最合适的权重。本文对基于MADM算法的网络选择过程的不同加权算法进行了综述和比较研究,这些算法允许为每个标准分配一个权重。

POWJAM: A power reaction system against jamming attacks in wireless ad hoc networks POWJAM:无线自组织网络中对抗干扰攻击的功率反应系统

Wireless ad hoc networks are vulnerable to jamming attacks due to their shared medium. Jamming is a type of Denial of Service (DoS), in which the attacker tries to block the communication by interfering with the radio signals. Among the DoS attacks, jamming is very simple to achieve and very hard to eliminate. In this paper, we present POWJAM (POWer reaction system against JAMming attacks), a system to react at jamming attacks in wireless ad hoc networks. The basic idea of POWJAM is to hide the communication from a reactive jammer through changing the transmission power. In normal 802.11 ad hoc networks, if a node A wants to communicate with its neighbors it uses a direct link. However, in POWJAM, A uses a path, in which the jammer cannot hear the communication on this path. By means of simulation, the POWJAM system is evaluated. Results show the effectiveness of POWJAM to defend against reactive jammers.

Non-cooperative RSU deployment in vehicular networks 车载网络中的非合作RSU部署

This work considers the issue of distributing contents to vehicles through roadside communication infrastructure. Within this scenario, this work studies the dynamics of infrastructure deployment by using game theoretic tools. A strategic game is used to model the case in which the operators perform their deployment decisions concurrently, whereas an extensive game is used to study the dynamics in case one operator is the deployment leader and moves first. The equilibria of the aforementioned games are then assessed as a function of several parameters (nominal infrastructure capacity, interference, vehicle flows). Simulations are used to validate the analytical findings.
