This chapter examines how the Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me fits within David Lynch's wider filmography. It analyses connections and commonalities between Fire Walk With Me and Lynch's other films, highlighting recurring themes and stylistic elements. It also mentions Lynch's film Wild At Heart from 1990, which was made during Twin Peak's second season that had won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. The chapter recounts Lynch's initial flirtation with the mainstream, such as a big budget adaption of Frank Herbert's science-fiction novel titled Dune in 1984 that had been a commercial, critical and artistic disaster. It talks about how Fire Walk With Me had been a product of Lynch's own making that expresses his own particular vision and continued to believe in, despite the critical drubbing.

This chapter analyses the first scene of David Lynch's Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me that gives insight into the dynamic within the Palmer household. It cites the scene of the evening that Laura realises Bob's true identity, which provides a clear view of the dysfunctional situation in the Palmer home. It also discusses the home as a site of horror that is a common genre trope, with the breakdown of the family unit at the centre of many horror films, such as Rosemary's Baby, Halloween, and Poltergeist. The chapter talks about how Fire Walk With Me presents an inversion of the Oedipal trajectory and exposes unconscious desires which Freud theorised as driving stages of sexual development. It mentions how Fire Walk With Me provide a narrative of family violence and trauma, following Laura as she tries to navigate her way and work through the ongoing abuse that she endures.

This chapter discusses Twin Peaks and its engagement with and subversion of genre conventions. It discloses how the Twin Peaks television series is viewed as a work of postmodernism and a pastiche of several genres that provide references to film noir, which gives the series a cinematic feel. It also points out that the Twin Peaks series parodied television genre conventions, while David Lynch's Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me is less interested in parody and pastiche and presents a more personal and subjective story. The chapter examines how Fire Walk With Me reveals more of the strange and unearthly realm that exists side-by-side with the town where larger forces of good and evil fight to gain control of Laura's soul. It describes the strong sense of the supernatural in Fire Walk With Me; an element that situates the film in the horror genre through the creation of mythical and mystical spaces.

This chapter explains how the Twin Peaks universe has expanded beyond the mediums of film and television and into the areas of literature and digital media, which inspired countless works of fan-made artwork and fiction. It reviews a brief survey of some of the key paratexts that interlock with David Lynch's Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, which opens up new facets and insights into the film's narrative. It also mentions The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer, which was written by Lynch's daughter Jennifer and published in October 1990 in between airing of the first and second seasons of the Twin Peaks series. The chapter details the The Secret Diary's initial release that reached number four on The New York Times bestseller list during the height of Twin Peaks mania. It explains book stands as a powerful testimony of the harmful and damaging effects of sexual abuse.
