The core mandate of the OIE, the World Organisation for Animal Health, is “to improve animal health worldwide.” We were particularly proud to host this symposium which has provided the opportunity for leaders in the field of animal genomics and animal health to come together and discuss new technologies that are changing the way we approach animal health research. Recent advances in biotechnology and genomics present unique opportunities to address global animal health challenges through multidisciplinary scientific collaborations.

Creating safe havens for the Africans seized on board slave ships was from early on a necessity for all those involved in putting into practice abolitionist policies throughout the Atlantic. This chapter examines the scope and limitations of the most important Atlantic reception centers, while exploring their impact on the places where they were located. It also considers a number of relevant issues related to the postcapture experiences of these Africans, including their mortality and morbidity figures for the period that followed their landing on or near these reception centers. Finally, it offers a discussion of the experiences of medical practitioners in charge of these centers and of the methods used by them to treat diseases.

At sea, disease was a common adversary to both slave traders and anti–slave trade officers in the various navies involved in the implementation of abolition policies in the Atlantic. Their many challenges are covered in the pages of this chapter, placing special emphasis on the ways in which they dealt with potential epidemics whenever they seized a vessel full of sick enslaved Africans. Other important issues discussed here are the ways in which they interacted among themselves and with coastal enclaves, and also how they often engaged in proto-colonial operations while carrying out their abolitionist work.
