The representations of HIV/AIDS in Danish AIDS campaigns 1983-1996. In this article we have investigated the representation of HIV/AIDS in Danish campaign material from 1983-1996. We have collected and digitized approximate 130 pieces of campaign materials, published by approximately 30 different organizations, administrative authorities, and municipalities in the period from 1983-2000. Using a cultural studies inspired strategy of analysis, we investigate how HIV/AIDS is visually, metaphorically and rhetorically signified in the material. Our analysis show that a specific homosexual aesthetic is formed by using a camp visual style of homoeroticism and homo-iconography. We argue that the campaigns not only work through reason but also by making intimate relations, identity, and desire to its object and strategy. Secondly, as the material rarely visualizes a body living with HIV or AIDS, our analysis shows, that HIV/AIDS are metaphorically and visually represented in the material as the catastrophe, that is hidden, and the biblical fall. Thus, we conclude that a visual and metaphorical chain of equivalencies that links HIV/AIDS with homosexuality, the sin, and the catastrophe, is present in the Danish HIV/AIDS campaigns.

The market for non-invasive cosmetic treatments for men has experienced a significant growth in the recent years. This article contributes to the discussion on masculinity and appearance with new empirical data from Denmark, where the male body is increasingly emerging as cosmetically modified in the media. Through qualitative interviews with Danish men aged 27-63, we explore how men who regularly use cosmetic treatments negotiate their experiences in relation to the imperatives, logics, and contradictions of consumer culture. Within this context, we identify prevalent narratives about masculinity, appearance, self-esteem, and aging. We apply affect theory to frame our analysis of the men’s narrative accounts. We argue that while men who use cosmetic treatments experience an increasing acceptance of men’s cosmetic bodywork and feel happy about their cosmetically modified appearances their experiences are, however, also marked by ambiguity, as they also experience pressure to pursue masculine body ideals and hide the signs of ageing. We highlight ‘the natural’ as a dominating ideal for correct and respectable self-presentation in the Danish context.

In 2019, oral Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), a HIV prevention pill, was made available for ‘at risk’ populations in Denmark with uptake primarily seen amongst men who have sex with men. While PrEP has provided both a revolutionary and emancipatory shift in HIV prevention, providing sexual freedom, safety and health, it is accompanied with firm medical and social surveillance, through which ‘PrEP citizenships’ are produced. This article draws on visual ethnographic data to explore how PrEP users in Denmark experience and reflect on the types of ‘work’ involved with, and moralities arising from, this ‘PrEP citizenship’. We argue that PrEP citizenship is contingent on the resources and abilities of individuals to proactively engage with this ‘work’ and balance the moral ambiguities of PrEP and we demonstrate that engagement with biomedical HIV prevention methods is an inherently social practice, making it desirable and possible for some to access, but not others.

The first 25 years of records management – an archive guide on AIDS/HIV in the National Archives’ collections 1981 – 2006. In the Danish National Archives, different kinds of records give insight to the history of AIDS/HIV. Our aim with this article is to present some of the most relevant records about the disease from the public administration and private organizations. The article will reflect the tran- sition in the public administration from storing the information on paper to using digital media for archiving. We will pay attention to how the records about the disease were created as well as how to find them in the archive.
