Abstract. Nowadays the scientific community is trying to design new techniques in the search for solving security problems in mobile agent technology. There are now some industry initiatives for using agents in real environments which need a solution for some of their security problems. Companies offering assistive service are getting cost reduction due to tele-assistive technologies. In this paper we present a proposal based on secure tunnels to add confidentiality and integrity to any agent platform, present or future, without making any changes to its source-code. Our system is currently implemented and working as part of a complete mobile multi-agent system used for tele-assistance. During our research we have also detected many other problems regarding the tunnelling approach. 1 A new perspective of security in mobile multi-agent systems There are a growing number of elderly people in Europe. Tele-assistive technologies are getting a lot of importance in cost reduction for companies and public insurance. Elderly community is also benefiting from a new era of comfort and additional services, such as continuous monitoring, full-time contact with relatives, new diversion services, etc. Relatives are also benefiting from this new kind of tele-assistance that lets them be in close contact with insurance centers and their family. As tele-assistive or tele-care technologies cope with personal data, there are even specific laws about this data treatment. Depending on the data sensitiveness stored and treated by the companies (public or private) they need to use different protection technologies. A relatively new approach to design and implement tele-care services is to use mobile multi-agent technology. Different classes of agents may be used to perform a large number of local and remote assistance and supervision tasks, such as sensorial data collection, alarm notification, health conditions monitoring, etc. This new paradigm has a lot of practically unresolved security-related problems. Systems and users are exposed to access policy violations, communications integrity and/or confidentiality, system crashes, information theft, information modifications, etc. These problems and others added from the use of mobile agent technologies

The growing percentage of elderly population imposes an urgent need to develop new approaches to care provision. Integration of a number of technologies such as multi-agent systems, federated information management, safe communications, hypermedia interfaces, rich sensorial environments, and increased intelligence in home appliances represents an important enabling factor for the design and development of virtual elderly support community environments. In this paper, a platform based on mobile agents combined with federated information management mechanisms is introduced as a flexible infrastructure on top of which specialized care services are built.

One of the biggest challenges facing European society in the years ahead is the fact that our population is aging at an alarming rate. If by the year 2020, current forecasts prove accurate, then by that time we will see a ratio of 1 adult below pensionable age to 4 elderly people. It is not surprising therefore that, initiatives such as raising the retirement age are under debate. But this will not address the issue of elderly care. New approaches must be found to providing easily accessible, affordable, quality care so that the elderly in our society do not become isolated and marginalized. Advances in network technologies can provide new opportunities for development but such developments, if to be successful, must consider the social issues involved. This article presents the approach to addressing social/non-technical issues, and some conclusions drawn by the partners involved in IST project, TeleCARE.

The paper examines some trends in the living arrangements and in the living conditions of the Portuguese elderly . The analysis draws on panel data from the European Community Household Panel and provides a sociological characterization of the living realities of the Portuguese elderly in order to ground in empirical evidence the discussion on the interest and viability of tele-care in the Portuguese context. The main argument of the paper is that in a society still strongly marked by traits of familialism, all mechanisms that are based on the idea of the elderly remaining in their homes are of potential interest in the sense that they can complement and improve the quality of the care provided by families. The second argument of the paper addresses the issue of the financial conditions of the Portuguese elderly and raises awareness for the limitations of any market-based solutions as potentially triggering further inequalities within the care system.

To study the validity of a 'smart' system of telesurveillance in elderly patients, GARDIEN, a passive infra-red sensor network, was connected to a computer placed at a remote site from the patient. It switched on automatically every day and remained active throughout the night. Data corresponding to movements within the room were collected twice per second. During the experimental period, the data file were analyzed manually and automatically; the results of the automatic processing were displayed in the form of a list with all movements noted together with the time and each movement’s duration was stored in a patient file. GARDIEN showed the patient data either in the form of curves or as three-dimensional histograms. We studied the nocturnal activity of 23 Alzheimer patients, with or without cognitive impairment. Their activity profiles were different. Moreover, the nocturnal motor activity patterns permitted to identify pathological states.

Abstract. In order to facilitate the development and integration of new services for telecare there is a need for the design and development of an open and flexible infrastructure into which services and supporting resources can be easily plugged in. A mobile agents based approach for such infrastructure was developed in the TeleCARE project and its architecture and implemented prototype are discussed. 1 Introduction Teleassistance and provision of remote care to elderly living alone at home represents a very demanding case of distributed system. Developments in this area have to cope with some important requirements, namely: • Openness, in order to accommodate a growing number of new services and supporting devices. • Support for heterogeneity, as different users have different needs and might possess a diversity of legacy systems (e.g. computers, home appliances, domotic infrastructures). • Scalability, in order to allow the integration of a variable number of users in a telecare community. Furthermore, this area represents a very sensitive domain in the sense that it deals with critical data about individuals, raising issues of security, and the need to guarantee a high continuity of service. These are in fact some of the pre-requisites to guarantee social acceptance of any new approach to the introduction of technology in elderly care. In spite of recent developments in computer networks and pervasive computing, effective implementation of telecare systems still requires the development of open and flexible infrastructures offering some form of plug-and-play functionality. With different organizations developing different products and services, in a variety of different areas, there is a need for a common platform into which all these development may be plugged so that interoperability is possible. In this context, one of the main aims of the IST TeleCARE project was the design and development of a generic platform that allows progressive addition, at a minimal cost, of new care services, home appliances, and monitoring / assistance devices. In this article we present the main features of Aingeru, a system that provides a new kind of tele assistance service. The purpose of developing Aingeru has been to overcome the main constraints that tele assistance services nowadays present: they are passive (they react only when the user requires it); their coverage is limited; and, they do not monitor automatically vital signs. By contrast, Aingeru, by using PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants), wireless communications and semantic web and agent technologies, provides a service with the following features: it is active (it reacts automatically in the face of anomalous situations); it can work anywhere and anytime; and, it can monitor vital signs and generate an alarm when necessary. Furthermore Aingeru permits physicians and relatives concerned with Aingeru users to consult data about them through the web. The main focus of the paper is on presenting the architecture of Aingeru and three aspects that are used in its development: agent technology, semantic web techniques and web services which constitute the pillars to obtain the new tele assistance features provided by Aingeru.

The main focus of the paper is on presenting the architecture of Aingeru and three aspects that are used in its development: agent technology, semantic web techniques and web services which constitute the pillars to obtain the new tele assistance features provided by Aingeru.","PeriodicalId":319584,"journal":{"name":"Tele-Care and Collaborative Virtual Communities in Elderly Care","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126807125","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present paper considers the activity of tele-care within the broad framework of the information age, of how modern society is organised and of the structuring role of the health sector. The importance of key concepts such as social structures, human agency and the instance of being-in-the-world, are highlighted and explored. The inputs of computer ethics, critical realism and philosophy of action are used and presented. These conceptual arguments are applied to the particular settings of tele-care business planning and of policy making. This paper assumes the controversial role of questioning our own assumptions as thoroughly as possible, and of working from that questioning process.
