Reading comprehension in foreign language learning is a complex process with many underlying cognitive components. SQ4R and Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) are teaching strategies helping students make sense of unfamiliar informational text step by step and cooperatively. This study investigated the effectiveness of explicit, incidental, and intentional learning conditions on reading comprehension in a multimedia environment. A total of two classes, including 62 EFL students were recruited to participate in this study. One class, which was experimental group, used SQ4R and Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) strategies with eBooks, while the other class, control group, just used SQ4R and Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) strategies. The collected data included pre- and post-test reading scores and satisfaction questionnaires. Using pre-test and post-test as well as the SPSS software application, the study evaluated the difference in scores of these groups regarding the reading comprehension capability. The results show a significant difference between the experimental and control group following ten weeks' using the application. Besides, students in experimental group are very satisfied with their teaching methods with eBooks, and have positive perspective about heterogeneity group and interactive activities. Therefore, most students are willing to continue using these teaching strategies in other courses.

Striving for sustainability has been adopted as a core value and guiding principle for development in the twenty-first century worldwide. Considering the learnings and changes of sustainability in society, especially the connection between software understanding and hardware construction was the key issue for the government. After the Earthquake 921 in 1999, the damages of school buildings started the rethinking of sustainable development in campus. Therefore, the Ministry of Education in Taiwan initiated a national project since 2002 to connect education and practice for sustainability, the Taiwan Sustainable Campus Program (TSCP), which adopt the practices integrated with environmental education and the sustainable renovation in school campuses to transform the sustainable sense from education to change the society. First of all, the Ministry of Education (MOE) organize a technical committee and a research project to set the program mechanism and processes of items with preliminary technical guidelines to guide the school review the problem of existing campus environment in 2002. An integrated process also by demonstration taken the pilot projects as tests to revise the items. In the year of 2003, the 16 items were set to start up the program. These 16 items were set as a step by step renovating processes to help the school working out their own sustainable campus by each unique living environment. Until 2017, more than 778 schools or colleges, about 15.4% of all institutes, have been subsidized by TSCP. At least one sustainable campus can be found in 68% of the smallest administrative units in Taiwan. Hundreds of teaching modules for various subjects, dissemination of sustainable concepts within neighboring communities, and extensive collaboration with grassroots resident for more sustainable societies have been generated and executed. Students learn about the sustainable concepts, ecological environment re-habilitation and green equipment from schools, and bring that home into community. In consideration of lacking the knowledge of adapting sustainable building technology, the Ministry setup the professional committee of sustainable campus to indicate the process of sustainable campus renovation, especially in technologies support and education. Upon the concepts of innovation and integration, ideas including campus rain water management, smart using energy, Bio-climatic control for thermal condition, and high endurance campus have been implemented. On the other hand, examples from higher institution, such as ‘The Green Campus Program of NTUT’ and ‘Magic School of Green Technologies in NCKU’, have also demonstrated the TSCP intention of sustainable development based on innovative technology and education. The success of TSCP for its implementation mechanisms and achievements is evident by the high involvements of number of institutions as well as voluntary and productive participation. This successful experience encourages all sectors involve

Mobile phone not only becomes an important extended-self but also provides opportunity for researchers to record and investigate people's daily behaviors through it. The central goal of the study is to understand people's daily life routine as well as how they use cellphone to communicate and interact with others. Compared with conventional methods such as diary method or experience sampling method, the study collected, visualized and analyzed logs of social media uses of thirty-five participants' cellphones for further interview. The results show that combining one's daily movement (including speed and location features) and apps usage timeline can help to discover routine patterns. The daily moving map and timeline of uses of apps shows both spatial and temporal regular patterns. In conclusion, daily activity data collected from new technology is believed to help social scientists to discover patterns in advance to develop in-depth questions for qualitative interviews.

In this project, we are interested in providing and customizing a distributable workflow of virtual reality 360 (VR360) suitable for compassion relief operation. Recruiting volunteers for disaster operation can face a number of obstacles and issues, these include physically and mentally challenges for volunteers. Disaster workers are usually volunteers from across the country and across the world. Most operations involves logistics in terms of financial support, transportation, emergency response vehicles and provide the victims and communities shelter, food, clothing, relief supplies and even comfort to those in need. In an ideal situation, we are looking at setting up a manageable workflow which can be operated by workers of compassion relief organization in terms of simplified method and apparatus for acquiring and generating 360 virtual content. The content should be operated and produced by multiple small teams of minimum-trained taskforces which have the capability to obtain and processing these 360 content in digital media.

In the paper, we introduce a method of topic detection using topic model for Japanese newspaper and propose to visualize the time change of the detected topics. In the study, we detected topics from newspapers published by Mainichi Newspapers from 2010 to 2015. There are about six hundred articles (number of characters: about 300 million) in the text data. We performed to extracts nouns as characteristic words of the text. We characterized the text with a latent topic which is hidden in the text and can be detected by LDA (Latent Dirichlet Allocation) which is one of a topic model. There are very diverse topics including politics, sports, lotteries, Southeast Asian affairs, Japanese economics, academics, and so on. From them, we noticed earthquake topics and focused on them. In order to grasp the characteristics of the topic, we visualized the change of the frequency of the occurrence and the top words on a monthly basis. In order to calculate similarity between topics, we used cosine similarity in which the frequency of word occurrence per topic was used. Analyzing topics by region helps you to grasp the situation fluctuation in the region. If we investigate the posting position of the article and the topic variation, we can find out the importance of the topic or the article at that time.

Large-scale city maps are very useful for our deep understanding of the urban history for various cities and areas. The existence of the fire insurance map, which are one of the large-scale maps, for the area under the Japanese administration before World War II had not been previously confirmed. However, the fire insurance maps for Taiwan and Karafuto (Sakhalin) before World War II were newly discovered at the Chiyoda City's Hibiya Library & Museum. Over 380 of these fire insurance maps for Taiwan and Karafuto (Sakhalin) were scanned and digitalized. These maps were compared with various other similar maps: topographic maps, commercial and industrial guide maps, city planning maps, residential maps, bird eye city maps etc., in order to identify their characteristics. In addition, the usefulness of these fire insurance maps for Taiwan and Karafuto (Sakhalin) was examined. These fire insurance maps are the most accurate and the most large-scale. Moreover, these maps also contribute more useful information.

In April of 2016, two large magnitude earthquakes suddenly hit Kumamoto, Japan, strongly affecting areas around the prefecture, especially the tourist area of Minami Aso northeast of Kumamoto City. Due to communication difficulties and the slump in tourism, the goal of this research was to create web technology applications for two areas: 1) to facilitate the return of international travelers to the Aso-Kuju National Park by promoting earthquake safety and information in English, and 2) to assist tourism employees in English for both explaining the environment around Aso in addition to interesting ecotourism offerings. The author and the research team conducted face-to-face interviews to collect both demographic data and data regarding Earthquake damage. Results found business owners wished to increase English usage to promote the area globally through detailed web technology such as environmental and earthquake safety Internet applications, which could be used for imminent disaster notification in English and notifying international travelers of the plethora of ecotourism related activities Aso-Kuju has to offer.
