We present a case of a 5 year-old boy who came to the emergency department after a week long history of worsening, throbbing headaches and episodes of unresponsiveness and nystagmus, lasting 20-30 seconds. The patient’s mother reported the patient had normal development and no significant past medical history, except a recent hospital visit for viral gastroenteritis. Labs and hypercoagulability studies were done, all of which were normal except a slight elevation in lactic acid. …

BACKGROUND: The opioid crisis catalyzed a national drive to better utilize non-pharmacologic pain management. To our knowledge, no study has examined staff, parent, or patient perspectives on acupuncture implementation in pediatric emergency departments (PED). OBJECTIVE: To understand staff, parent, and patient attitudes and barriers related to PED acupuncture. Background: The prevalence of cobalamin (B12) deficiency in children with sickle cell disease (SCD) is unknown, however B12-deficiency has been reported in 18% of SCD-adults versus 10% in patients without SCD (Kamineni 2006). A higher frequency of B12-deficiency in SCD may be due to higher rates of hemolysis, erythrocyte turnover and folate deficiency. Background: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder which predisposes affected children to episodic pain events, known as Vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC). Objective: Acupuncture has been shown to improve pain and other health outcomes in children and is well tolerated. However, use of acupuncture by pediatric medical providers is rare, in part due to the cost and time associated with formal training. Medical acupuncture certification requires 300 hours of training, costing approximately $11,000 (not including travel costs). Additionally, the training requires 3 weeks of on-site learning, requiring physicians to be away from their homes and medical practices. We aimed to develop an abbreviated basic acupuncture curriculum and assess its impact and acceptability with academic pediatricians.
