Pub Date : 2003-10-01 DOI: 10.1177/1066480703255798
G. Tennant, L. Sperry
This article both describes and demonstrates a brief counseling strategy for optimizing the overall health of three clients. Using the concept of positive spillover between the family domain and the work domain, a detailed health assessment, health status profiling, and a health resource enhancement strategy provided the vehicle to increase the client's work-family balance. The collaborative counseling strategy to optimize the clients' overall health seemed to increase the clients' desire to effect and maintain change in their lives. Additionally, the health status of key family members was positively and indirectly affected by this approach.

Couples Undergoing Infertility Treatment: Implications for Counselors
Pub Date : 2003-10-01 DOI: 10.1177/1066480703255389
Jennifer Savitz-Smith
This review examines the current literature regarding infertility counseling as it applies to clinical practice. Although there have been several excellent studies and articles published within the past few years, including ones in this journal, the references to a case study here adds another dimension to the literature. The author describes a case of a couple who is referred to counseling by the clinic performing the in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Current issues that family counselors face such as reactions to infertility, differences between male and female reactions, parenting after successful IVF treatment, reactions to unsuccessful treatment, and the role of counseling and psychotherapy are discussed.

A. Peterson, C. Jenni
Men's experience of making the decision to have their first child was examined through a phenomenological analysis of unstructured interviews with expectant fathers. Analysis revealed a dialectical structure to men's decision-making processes. Men who had made a conscious decision to become a father were shown to be emotionally invested in reproductive decisions, participating actively in this complex process.

Adult Sexuality
Pub Date : 2003-10-01 DOI: 10.1177/1066480703255386
Thomasina H. Sharpe
Sexuality is a complex and often confusing part of life, especially in respect to development. Each age brings a unique set of milestones and challenges. How one resolves those challenges has the potential to lead to outcomes ranging from great personal satisfaction to considerable pain. Sexuality is influenced by a combination of psychologic, social, and physiologic factors. A simple review of the literature reveals that there is no single unifying theory or approach to its development. At best, it is multidisciplinary and holistic, combining biologic, psychological, social, and cognitive disciplines and theories. This article addresses adult sexuality and its development from a multidisciplinary perspective.

Constructing a Solutions Timeline: Creating Possibilities in Counseling
Pub Date : 2003-10-01 DOI: 10.1177/1066480703254803

Generating helpful ways to approach relational difficulties is a main focus when providing counseling services to couples and families. This article describes a technique that may prove beneficial when working with clients who are stuck in repetitive, nonproductive cycles of interaction. The Solution Timeline allows clients to process their current difficulty from more global perspectives as it focuses on examining past significant life events in an attempt to rediscover solutions previously used. By exploring past coping skills, the therapist can assist clients in identifying and then mobilizing resources to deal with the current problematic situations. The construction of a Solution Timeline may thus be useful in facilitating more functional action.

J. Gold, Gretchen M. Morris
This article advocates a use of intergenerational and narrative therapies to conceptualize and intervene with a family's legacy of resistance to external assistance, as exemplified by counseling. This notion is based on a review of the current professional literature on client resistance. This article will offer intervention strategies for counselors who decide to integrate this agenda into their relational counseling.

Many researchers have suggested that parental divorce can influence intimacy and marital attitudes in the relationships of adult children of divorce (ACD). This study examined the effect of parental divorce on specific intimate relationship ideals. Participants consisted of 315 graduate students at the University of New Orleans who completed the Relationship Ideals Scale (RIS). Results indicated that parental divorce significantly affects the importance of specific relationship ideals such as affection, passion, and independence. Implications for counselors, counselor educators, and future research are provided.

Structural Family Therapy and its Implications for the Asian American Family

Asian American families often consist of the immigrant generation (parents) and the first generation (children). Because acculturation experiences vary for the different generations, conflict between family members may easily occur. Structural family therapy is presented as an approach that may be effective in helping Asian American families overcome the difficulties caused by differing acculturation experiences.

Perceptions of Marriage Preparation among College-Educated Young Adults with Greater Family-Related Risks for Marital Disruption
Pub Date : 2003-10-01 DOI: 10.1177/1066480703255044
S. F. Duncan, M. Wood
This study assessed levels of motivation to participate in marriage preparation and whether the manner in which marriage preparation programs are produced, priced, placed, or promoted needs to differ for those at greater family-related risks for marital disruption, with a sample of 964 college students. Although respondents with greater risks reported equal or greater motivation to participate in marriage preparation, they also had less optimism about marriage for themselves, which, in turn, negatively affected their motivation. Respondents had similar patterns of preferences for particular elements of marriage preparation programs, regardless of marital risk factors. Those with greater risks, however, rated parents and ministers as lower quality marriage information sources and were less interested in attending programs recommended by parents or ministers, led by clergy, and held in a religious setting, but were less deterred from participating if the leaders had less than "ideal" characteristics, such as being divorced themselves.
