The essence of the category "retail" is improved; the comparative characteristic of the properties of retail and traditional retail trade is given; the activity of foreign and domestic retailers by various features was investigated; the analysis of private labels trading in Ukraine is made; the dependence of the private labels sales volume on the type of foreign and domestic retailer as well as the name of the product is revealed. Attention is focused on the factors of increasing goods sales within the domestic retail market. In the course of the study it was found that for modern domestic retailers the growth is not related on the number of existing trading enterprises, the range of goods in the store, location of trading facilities, but mainly on the private labels share in the turnover, the prices of which are 5-20% lower than on traditional goods as well as introduction of loyalty programs, increasing the time of customers' stay in the store, improvement of design and corporate style, etc. It is offered to use indicators of high-quality retail services through the introduction of private labels, loyalty programs, merchandising, trading areas design as well as the necessity of their use in domestic retail is substantiated.
