In this volume, a group of economists describe and analyze the labor market in Japan and the wage system which serves as its framework. Their essays, which were originally published in leading Japanese economic journals, use statistical data to examine aspects of the working environment and the behavior of workers and employers. They focus on such specific issues as starting pay, working hours, job mobility, retirement, and unemployment. A number of the authors also explore the policy implications of some of the controversial items on Japan's internal economic agenda : a shortened workweek, extension of the retirement age, the right to strike in the public sector. This five-volume series explores the history of industrialization in Kurope, North America, and Japan, focusing on the different ways in which the changes and stresses associated with the industrializing process were handled in different societies. In this comparative analysis the contributors, all anthropologists, emphasize indigenous systems of exploitation and their interconnections with the worldwide traffic that developed during the eigh-teenth and nineteenth centuries. Relatively little has been published on Asian forms of slavery, which are contrasted here with African modes. Rawski provides a comprehensive study of the history and development of a group of industries which have played key roles in China's recent economic gains. The author focuses on engineering, chemicals, and allied producer industries, showing •J' how the growth of these sectors of ' the economy sparked a dynamic process of development which has spread to encompass the entire Chinese economy. What kinds of problems do Asian immigrant children face when they first land in the United States? What can teachers and schools do to alleviate their problems? These are the two principal questions discussed by panels of teachers and school administrators of the Philadelphia area at round-table sessions held in October 1978. The problem of commmunicating with the children and their parents, the cultural differences and the different patterns of behavior, the gap between the school and home, and the problems arising from lack of adult supervision after school hours are some of the topics discussed. The panelists recount their experiences and present observations with remarkable candor. Anecdotes and selections from diaries enliven the 77 pages. $4.50. An intensive study of an isolated island in the South-West Moluccans, identifying the fundamental principles of the island's social organization, and demonstrating how relationships between social groups and individuals are enacted in ritual and expressed in belief.
