The Extent of Contribution and Challenges of Women Council Representatives Performance in Decision Making Process: The Case of Gulu District Local Government (2016-2020)

Purpose: The study aimed at presenting the struggle of women councilors to remain active and relevant while participating at the Gulu district council politic and interrogates the challenges they face while exercising their legislative duties. Methodology: The research deployed qualitative methods of data collection including key informant interviews, focus group discussions, document review like council minutes. The study used in-depth interviews, focus group discussion based on the research questions derived from the objectives of the study. Meanwhile some data were quantified just for easy presentation purposes of the study data. Findings: This study argues that Women Councilors at local level are disadvantaged at the council decision making process and general council political participation compared to their male counterparts due to many factors that include biological, level of education plus the abstract environment already set by the patriarchy society. This study also adds that in the case of Gulu district, one of the post war conflict districts in Uganda, even the local media is hostile to the women councilors as they majorly report only negative things about them and not give them a positive projection in the press although beyond that, the study also notes that the media in question majorly rely on male councilors as their news sources and not the women councilors denying- female commiserate voices in their stories. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: The study recommended legislative training for women councilors and the use of local languages in extreme cases at the district council level to allow free expression of the group who could not comprehend English for council debates. The study also recommended gender mainstreaming in the local press to uphold deliberate gains by donors and the government on gender mainstreaming and inclusiveness at local level.

Purpose: This study aimed at determining the factors associated with adolescent pregnancy, motivating factors for girls to stay in school and the effects of adolescent pregnancy on education attainment and livelihoods in Iceme Sub County, Oyam District. Methodology: The study adopted exploratory study using a qualitative phenomenological approach. Using the principle of data saturation, the study engaged thirty-five participants that included adolescent mothers, school head teachers and other education stakeholders in two selected parishes in Iceme Sub County. Findings: Analysis of the responses about the causes of adolescent pregnancy generated five major themes, economic status, peer influence, substance use and abuse, inadequate sex education and domestic violence. Factors motivating girls to stay in school included becoming national leaders, better living condition and independence. It was revealed that the effects of adolescent pregnancy include dropping out of school, being chased away from home, developing complications during and after delivery, poverty and producing so many children. Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: The study suggests adoption of remedial policy measures that include; provision of income generating opportunities to families, strengthening the implementation of policy on domestic violence and violence against children, strengthen peer to peer education/ learning, policy that does not allow sale of drugs and other substance in shops that are not licensed as drug shops and regulated by the National drug authority, provision of counselling and guidance, identification of role models who can offer guidance to girls for them to have a bright future and become national leaders and affirmative action towards girls who return to school after delivery such that they are able to complete their education. This study contributes to the understanding of the plight of adolescent girls face in a post-war region situated in a less-developing nation.

Purpose: Gender inequality has thrived in Nigeria for too long. Feminist scholars therefore feel that there is urgent need to change the status quo through feminist inputs and this led to the present persistent advocacy for women empowerment. Drama has been mostly deployed as a means of expressing this new trend of discourse. Thus, Nigerian writers, especially feminist dramatists, consciously reflect in their works the frightening realities of the prevailing socio- political and economic situations in the country, drawing the attention of the masses, especially the female gender to the inequality inherent in their exploitation, mobilizing the society to rise up against their oppressors. This paper therefore, is set to examine the issues of gender and women empowerment in Nigeria as reflected in selected Nigerian plays. The plays include Tess Onwueme’s The Reign of Wazobia, J.P. Clark’s The Wives’ Revolt and Fred Agbeyegbe’s The King Must Dance Naked. Methodology: Textual analysis of the selected plays is carried out. Findings: The analysis reveals that drama can be employed as a weapon to break the walls of cultural barriers that impede the struggle of women for social, political and economic empowerment. Unique Contribution to Theory Policy and Practice: Thus, premised on the Womanist theory, this paper concludes that drama can be deployed as a means of promoting justice, gender equity and fair play in Nigeria’s drive towards the possibilities of true democracy. This is the playwrights’ contribution to the theory and practice of feminist drama in Nigeria.

Purpose: This report considers gender diversity across a range of spaces and places, the core purpose of the study was to stretch as far as possible the emerging dynamics in the conception of the term gender. Methodology: The researchers adopted a desk review of related literature to interrogate theories, discussions and results to enable it reach its conclusions. Findings: The researcher notes that while the notion of gender has been troubled, there exist opportunities to trouble it further. The highlight is on the scholarship that has sought to deconstruct genders, and the binary framing of man/woman and male/female roles and relationships, through a detailed desk review, this research has sought to draw attention to the emergence of geographical bodies that force the academic world to recognize the need to pay more attention to its distinctiveness. The queering of sexuality has meant that geographers are now tracing the ways in which lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer (LGBTIQ) bodies experience and live their gender beyond normative binaries. Research concerned with relational gendered subjectivities within LGBTIQ communities is discussed, and the study found that the trend of this research may conflate gendered experiences while privileging sexual subjectivities. Unique Contribution to Theory, Policy and Practice: The study has succeeded in drawing attention to how body geographers are tracing the ways in which the LGBTIQ experience and live their gendered lives beyond normative binaries

Is Gender Based Violence Related to Sanitation? A Case Study of Patongo Town Council, Uganda
Pub Date : 2022-11-26 DOI: 10.47941/jgrs.1139
Salad Diba Roba
Gender-based violence is a global problem that affects women of all races, colours and creeds. The Sustainable Development Goals also emphasise the need to pay special attention to women and girls regarding hygiene and sanitation. While lack of sanitation is not the main cause of gender-based violence, it is a significant contributor to its occurrence. Several studies have been published in the literature on violence against women in different parts of the world. Still, this study focused on Patongo Municipality, Agago District, Northern Uganda, where few studies have been conducted. This study investigated whether gender-based violence was linked to sanitation. The study focused on sanitation practices and gender-based decision-making. It also examined gender-based violence related to sanitation, including concerns, worries and fears, and economic violence. In general, the study looked at how sanitation practices may be linked to gender-based violence. Sanitation practice is gendered and mainly revolved around excreta, pregnancy and menstrual hygiene. These practices are the result of education, culture and economic status in the household. Therefore, these sanitation practices are shaped by different norms and roles among women and men. Men and women expressed stress related to sanitation, with women expressing it more. This stress results from the location of the latrine, its accessories and the taboos around menstruation and pregnancy. This study further explores the issue of safety, privacy, protection and shame concerning sanitation practices. Roles and responsibilities are gendered. For example, men decide on the location and financing of the latrine, while women are responsible for the daily maintenance of the latrine. Due to their education and socioeconomic status, women sometimes decide on the latrine's location. The community had different perceptions of gender-based violence. For them, gender-based violence referred only to sexual and physical violence. However, the study found various forms of gender-based violence in the community, including Sexual, physical, emotional and economic violence. Although these forms existed in the community, the study concluded that gender-based violence was not related to sanitation.

A Case Study of Patongo Town Council, Uganda","authors":"Salad Diba Roba","doi":"10.47941/jgrs.1139","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.47941/jgrs.1139","url":null,"abstract":"Gender-based violence is a global problem that affects women of all races, colours and creeds. \u0000This study investigated whether gender-based violence was linked to sanitation. \u0000Roles and responsibilities are gendered. Purpose: The main aim of this research was to determine the relationship between the quality of instructional materials and girl-child’ education in Oyam district. This thrust is significance of quality of instructional materials to girl-child’ education remains central because they have tremendous influence in the quality of teaching and learning of pupils as well as the extent of attention, they pay attention to lessons while in classrooms. This suggests that schools that fail to provide quality of instructional materials may hardly achieve the best in their pupils especially in the area of academic performance. This scenario continues to be among the reasons for wider disparities in the performance of girl-child and boys in a number of districts. Methodology: The study was guided by the cross-sectional survey using a mixed methods approach. Structured questionnaires administered to 139 respondents. Data were analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The results reveal that quality of instructional materials (p<0.01,) significantly predict girl-child’ education. Also, the quality of instructional materials appears have a significant effect on girl-child’ education in Oyam district. It is therefore proposed that the Ministry of Education considers providing instructional materials as a matter of priority if academic performance of both boys and girl-child is to be improved. Further, the school authorities should devise means of ensuring that they have in place some instructional materials. This should be through a number of initiatives such as getting photocopies of some of the key resource books or providing teachers with instructional materials such that they could develop their own instructional materials where applicable. Unique contribution to theory, policy and practice: The outcomes of this study supportive to both theory and policy on primary school education system especially concerning girl-child education because of its significance in sustainable development.

Purpose: This study explored how self-care awareness practice influences the physical well-being of African religious Women of the Catholic Church in Karen, Nairobi-Kenya. Methodology: Qualitative paradigm and phenomenological design were used. Target was all African religious women living in Karen. Maximum variation sampling technique was used to select four religious women’s congregations that participated in the study. Criterion sampling technique was used to select 10 participants for the study, comprising of 4 religious women, 2 religious brothers, 2 priests and 2 lay persons. Methodology: Findings revealed that, religious women in Karen-Nairobi were prevented from adequate self-caring due to overwork, negligence, wrong concept of religious life, poor remuneration, poverty, influence of entrenched gender role, inability to integrate prayer life, the apostolate and community life as well as a misunderstanding of the meaning of self-care. Unique Contribution to Theory, Policy and Practice: This study concluded that the lack of self-care awareness among African Catholic Religious Women in Karen affected their physical well-being. Suggested remedial interventions included awareness creation, greater access to education, designing and use of a self-care curriculum, regular supervision of self-care practice by superiors, the replacement of life-diminishing structures in the religious life and the Church, revision of life and establishing economic sustainability.

Gender concerns and experiences, as well as those of policymakers and programme implementers, should be considered when formulating policies and programmes in all areas of public life, including politics, business, and society. This ensures that women and men benefit from policies and programmes in the same way, while preventing inequalities from being perpetuated. This should also be integrated in the designing of machines used in homes too. This research seeks to investigate the impact of gender design on the construction of a fuel-less generator for female artisans in Nigeria. Investing in the development of a female-friendly fuel-less generator will be a significant step forward in reducing the sufferings of female business venture owners in Nigeria while causing little or no environmental impact. For this paper only responses related to whether this research will be a step in the right direction in addressing gender bias to previous work, that female artisans will be comfortable operating and using the new device and that Gendered centre design will receive a boost in product design especially in Nigeria are considered. The result showed that gendered centre design will receive a boost as a result of this research.
