Discriminating congestion losses from wireless losses using inter-arrival times at the receiver 使用接收端到达间隔时间区分拥塞损失和无线损失

We present a simple scheme which enables a TCP receiver to distinguish congestion losses from corruption losses. The scheme works in the case where the last hop to the receiver is a wireless link and has the smallest bandwidth among all links on the connection path. We added our mechanism to TCP-Reno to evaluate the performance improvement. We compared our scheme against Ideal TCP-Reno which is TCP-Reno that can perfectly (but artificially) distinguish between congestion losses and wireless transmission losses. Under favourable conditions, our scheme performs similar to Ideal TCP-Reno and can lead to significant throughput improvement.

The development of a client/server architecture for standardized medical application network services 为标准化的医疗应用网络服务开发客户机/服务器体系结构

Recently, there has been a great demand for distributed medical imaging systems to share information among medical institutions in an interoperable fashion. Connectivity between medical institutions requires sharing complete protocols defined by standards. The "DICOM" standard is evolving to define the communication messages and application services between two medical applications. We specify and design the client and server behaviour of the Upper Layer service of the DICOM standard using an object oriented pattern language. The hierarchy principle of statechart is used to facilitate the comprehensibility of the standard by providing a visual formalism for the specification. The specification distinguishes the behaviour of the Upper Layer services as a client or a server. A high level structure of the client/server is illustrated using a collaboration diagram for an association establishment scenario. Finally, a statechart object oriented pattern language is used to translate the specification into design, and a class diagram for the server is presented in UML notation.

Optimization design of filter banks in subband image coding 子带图像编码中滤波器组的优化设计

In this paper we present a new optimization-based method for designing filter banks in subband image coding. We formulate the design problem as a nonlinear optimization problem whose objective consists of both the performance metrics of the image coder; such as the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR), and those of individual filters. In contrast to previous methods that design filter banks separately from the other operations in image coding, our formulation allows us to search for the filters in the context of an image coder to maximize coding quality. Due to the nonlinear nature of the performance metrics, the optimization problem is solved by using simulating annealing. In our method, we first apply the optimization method to find good filter banks for individual training image and then select the one that performs best across all training images to be the final solution. In experimental results, toe show that the filter bank designed by our method improves the coding quality of the best existing filter bank in terms of PSNR on nine benchmark images.

The role of multimedia applications in our day-to-day life has dramatically increased in the last few years. In this paper, we present an architectural framework for the distributed multimedia systems. The architecture consists of three layers: the application layer, the configuration and synchronization layer, and the network layer. The three layers are backed up by two backbone layers, namely, the database and the computational backbone. We present a precise description of each layer together with formal specifications using finite state automata.

Soldier Phone: an innovative approach to wireless multimedia communications 士兵电话:一种创新的无线多媒体通信方式

A number of tactical military and commercial applications require multimedia, self-organising, high throughput, wireless networks that can operate independently of fixed or external infrastructures. The Soldier Phone system addresses these needs with an innovative concept, termed orthogonal domain multiple access (ODMA), to provide dynamic bandwidth management. It adjusts radio transmit and receive times, channels, and data rates to match the dynamic radio frequency environment and user traffic loading ODMA is embedded in a larger suite of protocols that manage the peer-to-peer communications. These include: ATM style switching for datagrams and virtual circuits; network management for routing, signalling, and address resolution; and user convergence for many traffic types. This protocol suite has been integrated with baseband digital signal processing functions to yield a wireless networking engine. Soldier Phone has been successfully demonstrated in a laboratory testbed.

Property verification for authentication protocols 身份验证协议的属性验证

Authentication is an essential component in building security frameworks to defend confidentiality and integrity in communication networks. A large number of seemingly secure authentication protocols have been found to be flawed, potentially leading to impersonation. The often too subtle nature of such flaws has generated much interest in their rigorous analysis and verification. This paper proposes a state based framework using the property verification technique to formally model and verify these protocols.

Performance of Windows NT porting environments Windows NT移植环境的性能

A cost effective method for developing complex software systems while managing reliability issues is to port existing applications to new platforms. A number of software products provide development and operational environments to facilitate the porting of UNIX applications to Windows NT. The goal of these products is to minimize the amount of code rewriting for the ported application. To this end these porting tools allow the recompilation of the UNIX code in a UNIX-like development environment on the Windows NT platform. Finally, they provide the necessary UNIX-like system calls to allow execution of the ported applications on Windows NT. We have conducted a series of tests to measure the performance of some standard UNIX applications when operated in conjunction with the different UNIX compatibility layers. For comparison we also executed the applications on the Win32 API, and performed tests with the applications running on Linux.

Software projects are typically managed in a rather ad hoc manner. On the contrary, many formal methodologies exist for software process management. However, processes are often lack the flexibility provided by the projects. In this paper, we present an integrated process and project management tool that derives benefits from both project and process management on the one hand and minimizes their disadvantages on the other.

An overview of HATS: a language independent high assurance transformation system HATS概述:一个独立于语言的高保证转换系统

Transformations that are based on syntax directed rewriting systems can have a significant impact on the construction of high assurance systems. However, in order for a transformational approach to be useful to a particular problem domain, a (general) transformation system must be adapted to the notation of that particular domain. A transformation system that can be easily adapted to various domain notations has the potential of having a wide range of applicability. We discuss why transformation is attractive from a high assurance perspective, as well as some issues surrounding automated transformation within specific problem domains. We then give an overview of a language independent high assurance transformation system (HATS) that is being developed at Sandia National Laboratories.

We discuss why transformation is attractive from a high assurance perspective, as well as some issues surrounding automated transformation within specific problem domains.
