This work focus the need for new educational software environments for exploration of global statistics. We present some concrete examples of highly interactive, non-linear, visual displays for explorative understanding of socioeconomic trends in the contemporary world.

Automatic TV program production with APEs
M. Hayashi, M. Douke, N. Hamaguchi
Although TV programs are an easy way to convey messages, thoughts or images to other people, program production is still difficult for individuals. We have been studying TV program Making Language (TVML) to enable individuals to create their own TV programs. TVML is a language to describe TV programs and the TVML Player interprets the TVML script and creates the TV program in real time. To simplify program production for the user, we are now studying a technique for producing TV programs automatically. Using this technique, a user can make a TV program merely by inputting key information into an automatic production module, which is named APE (automatic production engine). APE is a very simple unit that processes given text data and also outputs text data. APE converts XML input text into TVML to create a TV program. The user can create various types of TV programs on a PC by simply downloading favorite APEs and providing some input to the APE.

MVC dance: connecting software development and corporeality from agile process and pattern language perspectives MVC
H. Eiiti
This work describes the author's view on software development in the future from agile process and pattern language perspective. It places much value on interactions among stakeholders so we need a tool for consensus building on architecture through workshop. We propose a MVC dance and other pattern dances for architecture understanding and educational purposes.

Developing Squeak-based curricula through a collaborative "TIDE" course at Kyoto University and UCLA
Kentaro Yoshimasa, Y. Ohshima, K. Rose
We have been using SqueakToys in the ALAN-K project to construct a type of education environment While SqueakToys has great potential, teachers at Kyoto schools have shown hesitation to use it in regular classes mainly because there has not been any established course material yet. An approach we took in order to overcome this problem was to work with the students of the TIDE course at Kyoto University and UCLA. The unique characteristics of the TIDE course were that the lecture was focused on the childhood education with computers. Also, the students of this course have diverse background not only the grade or faculty but also the nationality. This was preferable set of students not only because the course treated the education issue, but also the students managed to provide different viewpoints. In the first part of the course, students participated in the joint course taught by Alan Kay and Yahiko Kambayashi about computing and education. Based on the insight from the lectures, the students tried to develop Squeak-based class materials that attempted to encourage the creativity of children. Finally, students held workshops with 5th and 6th grade children to evaluate their materials. We report the experience and results from this course.
