AbstractThis paper reports findings from a survey conducted to understand freelancing activities among archivists. Although most survey respondents preferred permanent jobs, many of them were forced to freelance for various reasons. More survey respondents believed the number and percentage of freelance archivists will increase than those who believed otherwise. Archival educators were expected to prepare archives management students for a freelance career. To support freelance archivists, professional associations need to offer more continuing education courses or workshop tailored to freelance archivists and consider creating a freelance website for archival services in collaboration with closely related professions. Keywords: Freelance archivistsarchivesarchives managementfreelance websites Notes1 Andrew Burke and Marc Cowling, “The Use and Value of Freelancers: The Perspective of Managers,” International Review of Entrepreneurship 13, no. 1 (2015): 9.2 André Van Stel and Nardo de Vries, “The Economic Value of Different Types of Solo Self-Employed: A Review,” International Review of Entrepreneurship 13, no. 2 (2015): 79.3 Andrew Burke, The Freelance Project and Gig Economies of the 21st Century (London: Centre for Research on Self-Employment (CRSE), 2019), 6. https://crse.co.uk/research/freelance-project-and-gig-economies-21st-century.4 Allessandro Gandini, “The Rise of a Freelance Economy,” in The Reputation Economy. Abstract A sustainable collection development in a national library requires long-term public trust. This article aims to clarify the necessity and priority of preserving conventional and unconventional types of documents as a national collection based on questionnaire surveys in Japan, focusing on public perceptions. The findings indicated that the public need conventional media such as books and journals with a high priority for preservation whereas the level of necessity and priority for archiving unconventional media, such as computer games and social media content, remains low. A logistic analysis suggests that time and exposure to unconventional media can gradually alter public attitude.

Abstract In the past, programmes to bring archives to the people of South Africa were designed but failed to meet their objectives. This study explores the use of murals as ‘extended archives’ to bring archives to the people of South Africa. Qualitative data were collected through observation and interviews with mural viewers in three purposively chosen sites. The findings imply that murals can be used as ‘extended archives’ to bring archives closer to the people. Such murals can be described and indexed for easy identification and further digitised and displayed on social media to promote archives.

Abstract The paper gave an empirical assessment of the role played by the United Nations (UN) on the repatriation of the African National Congress (ANC) liberation archives from all over the world back to South Africa. The paper employed a case study design. Data were collected through interviews and analysis of documents. The study found that little role was played by the UN to enforce international treaties or conventions to member states to repatriate ANC missing liberation archives from countries such as Italy and Spain. The study concluded that ANC is to engage in bilateral and multilateral relations to influence the repatriation of liberation archives.

Abstract Professional literature about archives and heritage organizations indicates an increased focus on community access. This trend presents a unique opportunity for archives to focus on use, educational outreach, and promotion through collaborations between heritage institutions and educators in secondary schools. This study presents bibliometric research on the relevant literature in the fields of library and information science and education from 2009–2019 to determine the extent of collaborations between cultural heritage institutions and secondary schools. Fifty-six articles met the study parameters and were analyzed in order to discover the number of published articles per year, which journals were the top publishers, the educational content area of each article, and whether digital or physical archival materials were described.

Abstract If the current COVID-19 pandemic has given archivists anything, it is the time to look strongly at current institutional programs. Whether it has made many consider the basic survival of their repositories, the efficacy of their outreach and collecting practices, or how to advocate for themselves to their users and governing bodies, the result is still a razor sharp look at their methodology. Through this, many have created additional documentation, expanded description practices, and even built new capacities entirely. This article will look at case studies of projects at two institutions – Seton Hall University and Georgetown University Law Library – that have creatively leveraged their resources during the coronavirus pandemic to both build on their collecting capabilities and expanded their outreach potential.

Abstract Utah State University Libraries Cataloging and Metadata Services unit investigated the discoverability of local EAD finding aids. Two versions of the same finding aid were described at the file level and item level, respectively. Analytics for each guide were assessed to discover which descriptive level was most frequently accessed. Patron search terms and finding aid tags was also assessed. Data shows that personal names are the most common type of search term, search terms are most commonly found in the Collection Inventory, and that the availability of item-level description improves discovery by an average of 6100% over file-level descriptions.

ABSTRACT The Archival Science Study Program, run by the Vocational College at Universitas Gadjah Mada, has produced numerous oral history archives since 1997 and has contributed diverse themes through the Oral History Program course in practical subjects. These oral history archives can be used by the public, through information technology, to facilitate knowledge transfer and as oral evidence using the ARISAN (Arsip Sejarah Lisan) mobile application. This study aims to describe the implementation of the oral history archives dissemination program, as one of the models used for oral evidence, as well as for recording the oral history published in the community.

These oral history archives can be used by the public, through information technology, to facilitate knowledge transfer and as oral evidence using the ARISAN (Arsip Sejarah Lisan) mobile application.
