| In Burkina Faso, small ruminant livestock owners face internal parasitism, particularly gastro-intestinal strongylosis (GIS), which causes severe losses on their farms. In response to this situation, endogenous strategies are being developed through the use of medicinal plants such as Cassia alata to combat GIS in the field. Thus, the present study was conducted to evaluate the anthelmintic efficacy of aqueous and hydroacetonic extracts of Cassia alata leaves on Haemonchus contortus, one of the most dominant strongles of small ruminants in Burkina Faso. For this purpose, a phytochemical screening of two extracts was carried out followed by in vitro antiparasitic tests with five increasing concentrations (6.25, 12.5, 25, 50 and 100 mg/ml) of the extracts on two stages life of the Haemonchus contortus parasite. The results obtained from the phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of steroidal and triterpenic compounds, anthracenosides, saponosides, polyphenols (tannins) and reducing compounds in the aqueous and hydroacetone extracts of the leaves of Cassia alata. In the in vitro tests, the percentages of egg hatch inhibition increased significantly (p˂0,05) with increasing concentrations and compared to the control. All concentrations tested showed vermicidal activity on adult Haemonchus contortus worms after 6 hours of exposure to freeze-dried extracts. These results show that both extracts have ovicidal and vermicidal activity on the Haemonchus contortus parasite. Further studies could be envisaged to evaluate the toxicity of the plant extracts followed by in vivo anthelmintic efficacy tests to support breeders in their use.

| The intestinal tract represents an ideal habitat for a large number of parasites, as compared to stomach’s acidic environment. The American alligator ( Alligator mississippiensis , Daudin) has “typical” vertebrate gastric pits and glands in the stomach mucosa, with a corresponding acidic gastric environment. Crocodylians have a remarkably effective immune system, which enables them to combat microbial infections and allows relatively quick wound healing. We sought to explore how the alligator’s immune system responded to parasites, rather than microbial, challenges. We examined the stomachs of 14 sub-adults, wild-caught, American alligators from the coastal region of Louisiana, and found that four (~29%) were infected with enteric helminthes. Two different nematodes were found: Dujardinascaris waltoni (Nematoda: Heterocheilidae) was found loose among the stomach contents, whereas Ortleppascaris antipini (Nematoda: Ascaridoidea) was associated with multifocal lesions in the gastric mucosa. These lesions were roughly 4 mm in diameter, housed multiple parasites, and formed an elevated node of mucosa and nematodes. As the parasites invaded the gastric mucosa, they induced a granulomatous inflammation near the lesion; the site of worm attachment was associated with a marked eosinophilic necrosis. This cellular response produced a penumbra around the invasive nodule that was clearly visible under light and electron microscopy. Embedded worms were surrounded by an eosinophilic exudation, presumably representing proliferating host mucosal tissue, which formed the elevated nodule. Mucosal burrows of the nematodes led to a loss of the gastric pits in the infected zone and a presumed decrease in digestive efficiency of the host alligator.
发现了两种不同的线虫:在胃内容物中发现了松散的waltondujardinascaris(线虫科:异线虫科),而Ortleppascaris antipini(线虫科:蛔虫科)与胃粘膜的多灶性病变有关。

| Toxopalsmosis is a serious protozoan disease of both medical and veterinary significance. Scanty data exists about its incidence in small ruminants in Saudi Arabia. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the Toxoplasma gondii infection in sheep and goats in Al-Baha Province, KSA. One-hundred sixty serum samples (109 sheep and 51 goats) were tested for detecting the antibodies to T. gondii infection using ELISA. The frequency of T. gondii infection in all tested animals was 20.625%. Among tested sheep 20.183%, while 21.56% of tested goats were seropositive respectively. Al-Mandaq region recorded the highest prevalence. Although this work is a preliminary, nevertheless a significant existence of toxoplasmosis in small ruminants in the study area is detected. This prevalence reflects a problem of both economic and public health concern and requires implantation of effective control programs as well as further studies and continuous monitoring of toxoplasmosis status in small ruminants in the region.

Scanty data exists about its incidence in small ruminants in Saudi Arabia. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the Toxoplasma gondii infection in sheep and goats in Al-Baha Province, KSA. One-hundred sixty serum samples (109 sheep and 51 goats) were tested for detecting the antibodies to T. gondii infection using ELISA. The frequency of T. gondii infection in all tested animals was 20.625%. Among tested sheep 20.183%, while 21.56% of tested goats were seropositive respectively. Al-Mandaq region recorded the highest prevalence. Although this work is a preliminary, nevertheless a significant existence of toxoplasmosis in small ruminants in the study area is detected. This prevalence reflects a problem of both economic and public health concern and requires implantation of effective control programs as well as further studies and continuous monitoring of toxoplasmosis status in small ruminants in the region.","PeriodicalId":354868,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of Advances in Parasitology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130087842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
