Background/Purpose: No studies have yet examined health care transition (HCT) among transgender youth, although they are known to experience difficulty accessing culturally competent healthcare. The goal of this study was to identify gaps in education and support for transgender youth transitioning gender-affirming care to an adult healthcare setting. Methods: Transgender youth 14-21 years old and their parents were recruited at clinic visits for gender-affirming care at a pediatric medical center. For patients ≥18 years old attending visits without …

Program Goals: At the start of 2018, a group of queer-identified undergraduate, medical and graduate students, healthcare professionals, and community members from the Greater Capital Region and Michigan State University met to discuss LGBTQIA+ community health and wellness needs. From that initial meeting we established Queering Medicine, a grassroots coalition that follows the tradition of queers taking their health into their own hands by seeking sustainable healthcare system changes. Since 2018, Queering Medicine has grown from a group of five individuals to more than twenty and recently entered a collaboration …

Background Collection of demographic information about sexual orientation (SO) and gender identity (GI) is crucial to address inequitable health outcomes for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGTBQ) youth.1,2 To begin to understand the needs of LGBTQ patients, this study describes SO and health behaviors at a pediatric emergency department (ED). Methods We administered a survey to 12-18 year olds presenting to the ED between December, 2018 and June, 2019. The survey contained questions adapted from the Minnesota Student Survey about SO, mental and sexual health, substance use, and violence.2 We …

Background/Purpose Approximately 0.7% of US adolescents identify as transgender or gender diverse (TGD). In recent years, TGD children have been presenting for treatment at increasing rates. While this population is at increased risk for mental health comorbidities, studies have demonstrated that TGD children supported in their gender identity have decreased risk. To date, few studies have described how many TGD patients are ultimately treated or the time-to-treatment (TTT) in this population. The aim of this study was to understand medication practices, TTT, and how they vary by different demographic and clinical factors. Methods Patients were identified using TGD-related …

Exposing and Filling the Gaps in Care for LGBTQ Youth on the Westside of Chicago 揭露并填补芝加哥西区LGBTQ青年关爱的空白

In 2015 there were 11,231 homeless youth in Chicago, with 20% of those identifying as LGBTQ (Chicago Coalition for the Homeless). This percentage is presumed to be higher because individuals may not wish to self-identify as LGBTQ when seeking to utilize the shelters and support services (Durso and Gates, 2012). LGBTQ youth experiencing homelessness are a population vulnerable to violence, discrimination, and trauma. One study quantified the rate of suicide attempts amongst the group of youth to be 62% (Van Leeuwen, Boyle, Salomonsen-Sautel, and Baker, 2006). The health needs …

Background Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGTBQ) youth have poorer health outcomes than straight or cisgender youth.1,2 Understanding a child’s gender identity (GI) is an opportunity to intervene in this disparity. As one approach, we sought to describe GI and health behaviors among adolescents in an emergency care setting. Methods A survey was conducted in 12-18 year olds presenting at two urban emergency departments in Minnesota between December, 2018 and June, 2019. Background: Gender non-confirming youth are seeking to match their physical characteristics with their gender identity through hormonal and surgical interventions. The main study objective is to assess the prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities between patients who received only pharmacological treatment and those who also had gender affirming surgery. A secondary aim is to evaluate the degree of dysphoria before and after interventions. Methods: A retrospective chart review of transgender adolescents attending a pediatric endocrinology clinic between 2014 and 2019 was conducted. Patients were younger than 21 years. Clinical characteristics and therapeutic …
