生物の形状や運動は,過酷な生存競争を勝ち残るため進 化的に精錬され,生理的合理性を持つと考えられています. イギリスの物理学者 Robert Hooke(1655)が顕微鏡観察によ って生体の最小単位である細胞(Cell)が発見して以来,日 進月歩の勢いで顕微鏡技術は発達し,昨今の生理学・生物 学・医学の発展に大きく貢献しています.生命現象の理解に は,顕微鏡などの観察ツールは必須であり,この観察技術の 発展に伴って,生命科学の理解が深まったといっても過言 ではありません.例えば,細胞スケールにおける蛍光顕微鏡 とナノトレーサー粒子を用いた流れ計測によって,胚発生 時において細胞から突き出た繊毛が細胞周りにノード流を 生み出し,遺伝子発現因子の局在を作ることで,体の左右非 対称性を示す体左右軸を決定する1ことが明らかになって います.生体内外では細胞スケールから臓器および個体ス ケールの様々な流動現象が存在します.我々はこれまでに 生体内外の流れについて,流れ場に侵襲性が低い(生体への 悪影響を与えない)計測方法を独自に開発し,流れの生み出 されるメカニズム解明やその流れの生体への生理的貢献を 流体力学的観点により解析・解明を行ってきました.
