: Analytical psychology, as proposed by Jung, adopts a series of distinct concepts. The personality manifests impersonal elements, collective and elaborated by inherited categories or so-called archetypes. Among the archetypes are the persona, the shadow, the anima, the animus, and the self. Considering this context, this study poses the following question: can the confrontation with the shadow archetype allow the patient to evolve and complete his individuation? In this sense, the main objective was to investigate the main aspects of the shadow archetype in the life of the individual. The specific objectives were to describe the archetypes and their relevance and interrelation during individuation; to characterize the shadow as a constituent of the subject’s pisque; and to investigate the confrontation with the shadow as a strategy of self-knowledge. A narrative literature review was developed. Recognizing and integrating the shadow side of the personality is a sine qua non condition for self-knowledge.
