Since the inception of our organization, the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) has been committed to supporting research in the field of dance education. Our primary objectives have been to identify research priorities and disseminate research through our scholarly journals, reports, conferences proceedings, and other avenues. We see research as integral to our mission to advance dance education for all, as it can help promote better pedagogical practices and raise awareness of issues related to justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Jane Bonbright, NDEO Founding Executive Director, highlights the importance of research for advancing the field: “My research was and is directed to providing direction to a field searching to establish dance as an art form in education at the turn of the century forward. Dance education research gave us data upon which to build our identity and provide directions to a new field– exactly why dance education research was imperative and mattered.”

“I’m Not Thinking about It to Understand It, I’m Thinking about It to Do It”: Students’ Sensemaking Experiences from the Modern Dance Classroom “我不是想去理解它,我是想去做它”:来自现代舞蹈课堂的学生感官体验
Q1 Arts and Humanities Pub Date : 2023-01-02 DOI: 10.1080/15290824.2021.1884870
Matthew Henley, Robert L. Conrad
ABSTRACT This research explores the question: How do students describe their own sensemaking practices in the postsecondary modern dance classroom? Based on semi-structured interviews with three postsecondary dance students at the first author’s institution, this article presents individual accounts that capture students’ perceptions of making sense of new movement material in a modern dance class. From the accounts, three themes emerged: implicit curriculum, the embodied mind, and the role of attention. We discuss these themes in relation to existing literature from learning theory and dance education and offer implications for creating an equitable learning environment. This research, which blends teacher self-study and qualitative inquiry, is intended to inform departmental practice and contribute situated perspectives to theories of learning in dance.

Co-Archiving a Ballet Repertory Course during the COVID-19 Pandemic
Q1 Arts and Humanities Pub Date : 2022-11-08 DOI: 10.1080/15290824.2022.2119241

Archiving is a process of organizing and creating content for sustainable, long-term access. However, the “archivists” actively shape the content in the realm of the performing arts, which often involves adding a new layer of knowledge to the original artform. This article explores the archiving of a ballet repertory course conducted in a higher education institution in Hong Kong during the pandemic, including the archival product and the collaborative process between a multidisciplinary team of people from dance, education, and library science. While teaching repertory online has its challenges, being “online” also offered unique learning experiences. Aiming to illustrate the topics related to hybrid pedagogy and individual creativity in use during the pandemic, the team conducted interviews with some participants for the purpose of creating a series of short educational films. These materials were collected and stored in the institution’s digital repository as the first archive for a specific course. © 2022 National Dance Education Organization.
