J. Milton Johnston (1844-1930) founded and edited a periodical titled The Johnston Eye Echo. The bi-monthly periodical was the first with content that was exclusively optometric. This article contains a brief biographical sketch and discusses the 1892 book, which compiled and expanded upon some of the material that Johnston published in the periodical.

There have been many challenges to the profession of optometry at both the state and federal level during its 110 years of legalized existence. These challenges have involved the passage of the original state practice acts, clarification of the original optometry laws, passage of state board rules and regulations and efforts to eliminate commercialism. This was followed by the expansion of state optometry practice acts authorizing the use of diagnostic drugs, therapeutic drugs or other clinical procedures. Additional challenges have been federal in nature and therefore broader in scope but still of great importance for the profession. Colorado is unique in that the Colorado Optometric Association (COA) defended optometry’s right to use the tonometer and fit soft contact lenses in a lawsuit that had national implications.

Charles F. Prentice published a book entitled, Legalized Optometry and the Memoirs of its Founder in 1926. Only 200 copies were published. This 416-page book was divided into two parts. The first part describes the events that transpired leading to the attempt to pass the first optometry practice act in the state of New York. The latter part describes Prentice’s life. While every optometrist has heard of Prentice, many are not familiar with his contributions to the profession of optometry. This summary offers an opportunity to read about the achievements of the man who has been called the “Father of Optometry.”

This article recalls events that led to the passage of legislation authorizing the use of drugs for diagnostic purposes by optometrists in other states prior to the law’s passage in the State of Alabama. Some states authorized optometrists to utilize drugs for diagnostic purposes by state statue and others by attorney general’s ruling. In Alabama a new state optometry practice act was passed in 1975. This law was complex and confusing, and of equal importance, resulted in a series of attorney general’s opinions, after the new state optometry practice act was passed. A series of Attorney General’s opinions shifted between a favorable, or an unfavorable, opinion over the next seven years. Finally, in 1982, the Attorney General issued a final determination that resulted in a favorable opinion for optometry. During the ensuing years no lawsuits were brought against optometrists that involved the use of drugs for diagnostic purposes.
