Gender and Political Economy: A Pandemic Petri Dish

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted many inequities in global society, particularly those regarding gender. As the primary caregivers of the world, working women already suffered from the double burden of caregiving coupled with paid employment, and the pandemic has only increased this burden. The disproportionate job losses for women during pandemic-related shutdowns have exacerbated financial pressures and contributed to physical and mental challenges for women as well, creating what has been called a female recession. Women who have kept their jobs often find themselves in frontline roles with potential exposure to the coronavirus, forced to choose between financial security and physical safety. These difficulties are even greater for women with children whose careers, interrupted by childcare, are losing job experience and seniority in addition to financial savings and retirement contributions, worsening the motherhood penalty for working mothers. The shadow pandemic of gender-based violence has also surged due to lockdowns in close quarters, economic pressures, and high stress levels among families. Feminists throughout the world are calling upon their national governments and international organizations to address this gender crisis within the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Social Identity Construction of Cosmopolitanism: The Nation State and Transnational Social Justice Movements

The COVID-19 pandemic is an exemplar of the consequences of global economic development contributing to national crises that require supranational cooperation, collaboration, and coordination to address. Threat and use of deadly force will fail to overcome these crises and is likely to worsen them. The nuclear setting proffers such responses as potentially suicidal. Growing awareness of economic and political interdependency is expanding de facto awareness of existing in a global polity. Complex interdependency presents opportunities to develop further these critical global polity collective capacities. Strategic neo-functionalism can promote cosmopolitan political attitudes and values via creation and promotion of vested interests in global integration. Social identity theory posits three forms of social identity management on the basis of four primary individual impulse axioms: (1) a distinctive motivation of the subject is to maintain a positive self-image;(2) subjects form in-groups vis-à-vis out-groups;(3) individuals comparatively evaluate the social status of their in-groups with significant out-groups;and (4) individuals tend to equate the comparative status of their ingroup with their self-image. If and when individuals comparatively evaluate themselves negatively within their societal contexts, then they will respond psychologically and socially, individually and collectively. Social justice movements press for the accommodation of differences to cease using them as a basis for ascriptive hierarchical community societal status differentiation. This accommodation takes the form of creation of substantive social creativity capacities that ultimately produce measurable, exploited social mobility opportunities. It aims to be policy relevant by underscoring the tasks confronting regime strategists for managing nationalism.

Roman and American physicians treated novel pandemics without existing cures or vaccines with similar protocols. Methodology: Historiography and conceptual analysis of the writings of physicians in ancient and modern times. Results: Ancient and modern physicians used a similar protocol for the study of unfamiliar pandemics. This protocol included: 1) subjective information from the patients, 2) the objective findings of physicians, 3) assessment of these findings and their correlation with other patients with similar subjective and objective data, 4) formulating a treatment plan. They also used a similar protocol for treatment of novel pandemics. This protocol included: 1) Mitigation, 2) Treatment of symptoms, and 3) Experimentation with novel therapies. Conclusion: Roman and American physicians treated novel pandemics without existing cures with similar protocols. The change involves modern vaccines, serums, scientific testing methods, personal protective equipment, advanced therapies, and mechanical devices unknown to the ancient Romans. © Common Ground Research Networks, Valentine J.
