The temporal beginning and end boundaries of a historical event and period are often represented as another event or period rather than an accurate date and time (e.g., the early modern period is often defined as beginning from the Renaissance). This study proposed a procedure to describe time intervals of events and periods whose boundaries are defined by other events or periods, as resource description framework (RDF) data and to determine their temporal positions. This procedure enables an RDF data to have information about the original definition and semantics of the historical event or period in addition to temporal range. Calendar periods, such as dates, months, years and decades also can be considered as resources having a temporal range just like the historical events and periods, and can be used to specify boundaries of a time range. This means that the time intervals described according to the proposed procedure can be processed in the same framework, regardless of whether they are based on dates or events. Subsequently, this study examined the temporal position of a time interval by tracing links between resources used to specify the time interval.

To develop brain training apps for elders and dementia sufferers, and to use Humanistic Buddhism Practice (HBP) as a tool for enhancing the cognitive function and emotional wellbeing of people with dementia. HBP apps have three activities: Fingertip-Writing (Humble Table, Wise Fare), Meditation (Humanistic Living Chan) and Read a Prayer (Pearls of Wisdom). A quasi-experimental study will be needed to evaluate the effectiveness of this intervention on enhancing the cognitive functioning and mental wellbeing. It will need both English and Chinese centers with nearly 100 elderly people to participate this study and do the assessment with the intervention of the app. This is an age friendly project for older people, that can enhance public knowledge about dementia. The research will also evaluate the benefits of the service model using apps for various users including dementia sufferers, family caregivers, and care center staff. The study will invite caregivers and staff to complete a questionnaire about the usage of the app, in order to investigate the opinions about ease of access and use of the app and the effects of the app as they experienced them.

Two Theravada Buddhist temples in Laos and Thailand containing exemplary and significant artworks, which were in one case intentionally destroyed and in the other degraded by seismic events, were archived by us and others periodically in still and video formats. The lost interior murals were successfully replicated inside the new replacement structure at their original size, coloration, and general layout. In the second case, those most-damaged reverse glass paintings (RGPs) —a medium not lending itself to attempted repairing of the originals— were reproduced and reinstalled using traditional techniques with varying levels of success; and also completely digitally restored by first using image editing software and then were inkjet-printed on the backs of new glass panes. One entire wall of the in-situ RGP array was re-created at its actual size for a museum exhibition in the United States.

This paper employs a data-driven approach to understanding the relationship between online course production quality, instructional effectiveness, and student satisfaction. To accomplish this, it assesses data from six years of student evaluations for online courses and compares it to the production style and quality present in those courses. The quantitative multiple choice course evaluation questions speak to issues of overall quality and satisfaction, student learning, and content and lesson clarity. Qualitative student comments are also assessed to understand the degree to which production quality is highlighted as a driving factor in both student enjoyment and instructional effectiveness. Finally, trends in evaluation data are analyzed in conjunction with the quality and style of each course to provide a better understanding of how students perceive the value of production quality. This project serves as an important step in furthering evidence-based online pedagogy and provides valuable insights for how to best allocate time and resources with regard to online course production.

What would happen if online course content was produced at television-or even cinematic-level quality? Would students become more engaged? Would they learn more and more deeply? If so, would the gains be worth the expenditure of time and funds that higher video production quality requires? To put it another way: Do investments in video production quality result in measurable increases in students’ achievement of learning outcomes and objectives? Questions such as these are at the heart of this preliminary discussion of production value for online content creation, which investigates a grand challenge facing higher education and society generally, as we navigate the spectrum of modalities in a post-pandemic world. This questions that this paper proposes stands at the intersection of educational scholarship, course content creation, student retention and persistence, and the achievement of learning outcomes and objectives. It, therefore, seeks to push forward a model for change and improvement in university education and teaching and learning on our campuses.

Collecting, sharing, and preserving digital research assets are essential for improving knowledge production’s efficiency and reliability. However, efforts have been insufficient, and many digital assets have disappeared. We have established a research project RsDA with libraries, archives, and museums of major universities and research institutes in the Asian region. This paper will introduce the RsDA Inventory, an inventory of online databases related to the Asian region, as a core outcome of the project. We migrated the inventory data to Wikidata throughout the project, and behind that, the guidelines and data models played essential roles. RsDA activities and outcomes will contribute to realizing an open academic information environment and long-term preservation of such information in the Asian region.

This paper describes machine learning approaches for the study of the Chinese Buddhist Canon with bibliographic, quotation, and terminology databases. The use of these techniques brings traditional artifacts of academic study for the Chinese Buddhist canon to scholars’ digital desktops as well as English translations of modern Chinese literature discussing the canon. The bibliographic database includes English translations of titles, references to modern translations, parallels in Sanskrit and other languages, and general references. Machine learning can be used to help the scholar discover relevant information in full text search with key bibliographical information surfaced for context. The goals of this are to make study and translation of Chinese Buddhist texts easier and faster with bibliographical content and presented to a reader in an easily discoverable way, with user interface elements such as tooltips with mouse-over, popovers, and search snippets. The machine learning approach in this case is based on a logistic regression statistical model for relevance using document similarity. Examples will be given from the Taishō Tripitaka.A database of multilingual quotations found in Buddhist literature will be briefly described. This paper will describe the use of a decision tree classifier on a corpus of bilingual phrases trained for relevance. The explainability and simplicity of the model and smaller amount of training material will be contrasted with the needs of deep learning models. Examples will be given from the Blue Cliff Record.Thirdly, use of machine translation of modern Chinese text into English with the Fo Guang Shan Glossary of Humanistic Buddhism embedded will be described. This approach uses deep learning with the Google Translate API. Although many of the translations are surprisingly good and the overall result is helpful, the challenges relating to the accuracy of the results will be examined critically. The need for modifications to the glossary to improve translation quality will be explained. Examples of translations with Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s works comparing machine and human translation will be given.

Almost of all rural villages in the northeast of Thailand have their brief historical records of establishment, and original places of their early migrants are often mentioned. But identifying actual places of these names tends to be difficult, because place names are not always stable for long. It is essential to arrange spatio-temporal integration of place names which can offer useful information to a study to discover long term dynamism of development in rural areas. The author has been collecting old place names of village level from various maps covering the northeast of Thailand which were published from early to middle 20th century. Not a few place names in the northeast of Thailand are found that words of other than Thai language are used. For not to leave these village names as just phonetic symbols, but for to understand the background of communities, place names from areas beyond the national boundary around the Dangrek Mountains have been collected. Many native non-Thai words in place names described in Thai can be identified as phonetic transcription from Khmer words. Thus, the background of such villages can become understandable.
