Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD) is an AI-complete problem where senses of words in the documents must be correctly selected from a senses inventory. Support Vector Machines (SVM) method has been successfully applied to supervised WSD. In contrast, perceptron has not been popular in supervised WSD. In this paper, a supervised method combining Margin Perceptron (MP) and Platt's probabilistic output is proposed to solve the word sense ambiguity problem. Experiments were conducted on Senseval-3 English Lexical Sample Task data set. The performance is comparable with systems using SVMs. Our system is in line with the best system participating in Senseval-3, regarding that we only used given training data, and no classifiers combination technique was applied. The advantage of our method is mainly two-fold: Firstly, good achieved performance shows that MP can be applied to problem with limited training data, especially in natural language processing. Secondly, MP algorithm used in this work is easy to implement, which benefits the application and the extension of the algorithm.

The OPC (Openness, Productivity, and Collaboration; formerly "OLE for Process Control") standards today have been accepted as industrial standards for designing and developing industrial applications in manufacturing and process automation. However, the development of real industrial applications using the OPC standards at universities is limited due to the complexity and difficulty. In this paper, not only the current state of the OPC standards is provided, but also the current problems and how they can be managed and overcome are discussed. The general integration architecture based on the new OPC Unified Architecture (UA) specifications is then proposed and presented together with the initial results from the performed simulation. The potential areas of the proposed architecture and the redundancy strategies to increase the efficiency and reliability of the system are also introduced.

Nowadays, the availability of the Internet and the development of information and communication technologies (ICT) have inspired the development of strategies that take advantage of the enterprises' abilities to create networks or to network with other enterprises. Those technologies help supply information to facilitate the communication and the collaboration as well as to strengthen the relationships between economic entities. Correspondingly, the concept of inter-organizational information systems (IOIS) has emerged as an indispensable infrastructure for obtaining more competitive advantages in the network age. On the other hand, service-oriented computing has become a promising approach for building service-oriented inter-organizational information systems (SO-IOIS). A SO-IOIS provides a loosely-integrated suite of information-intensive services that can be used within business entities in a network to coordinate their business activities. It provides significant value to inter-enterprise networks. This paper presents a conceptual framework for designing service-oriented inter-organizational information systems. An example about designing a service-oriented inter-organizational information system for a travel and tourism network is presented as well.

Many-core systems differ from traditional multi-processor systems in performance characteristics and sometimes behave in unfamiliar ways for us. This can lead us facing performance troubles from unknown causes, requiring long time to fix them. To address those situations it is important for us to accumulate technology and know-how on performance of multi-core systems through a plenty of case studies. This paper describes a case study on unusual phenomena of a many-core based system in executing DBT-1 transactions with MySQL; where system throughput was decreased with the increase of the number of cores, an appearance of a scalability bottleneck. The root-cause analysis based on several measurements of the system has succeeded to reveal that the problem was caused from an interaction between two bottlenecks at the different layers, hardware and software, which is hardly found in traditional systems. The bottleneck at the hardware layer has been alleviated by introducing a newly developed lock mechanism that the analysis results suggested. Although the problem may be particular to the system, we, however, believe that the method and process to identify the root cause are of wide use for various scalability bottlenecks.

Less cooperative iris identification systems at a distance and on the move often suffers from poor resolution. The lack of pixel resolution significantly degrades the iris recognition performance. Super-resolution has been considered to enhance resolution of iris images. This paper proposes a pixelwise super-resolution technique to reconstruct a high resolution iris image from a video sequence of an eye. A novel fusion approach is proposed to incorporate information details from multiple frames using robust mean. Experiments on the MBGC NIR portal database show the validity of the proposed approach in comparison with other resolution enhancement techniques.
