Nursing administration is a social process. It fulfils its ultimate purpose of caring for people's health within an interpersonal climate, a complex network of communications of various forms and directions. And it is true that the interpersonal problems are the most serious inhibitors in effective nursing administration. To achieve excellence in any administrative post, the nurse must have a mature integral personality and highly developed communication, collaboration and leadership skills.
The interest for nosocomial infections has been increased in the past 20 years. Nosocomial infections are an important problem because these increase the patient's morbidity, the patient's mortality and the cost of the hospital. This article reviews recent developments for the understanding of pathogenesis, predisposing factors of infection and efficacy of nosocomial infection surveillance and control programmes.

This paper is a description of the European Conference on Nursing held in Vienna, Austria from 21 to 24 June in 1988. The most important papers, statements and speeches presented, are outlined. The "Market Place" and the discussions in the works groups are described. The students views for the conference are also present.

Finally the necessary changes in nursing education and nursing practice which will enable nurses to play their important role in the development of the new PHC programs in the country are stated.
