In this article I shall show how deftly Fàbregas creates in her novel Landen two separate but thematically connected stories and leads them to a very satisfying and totally unexpected ending. Landen is an intriguing psychological novel where the two main characters, Him and Her, tell, in alternating chapters, their own story in the first person. They only meet once, in the first chapter, where the Him character dies. I shall first look at the main characters’ life experiences, i.e. the car accident in which the Her character loses her parents and the experiences of the Him character as an emigrant and later as a widower. I shall then describe the contrasting attitudes they each adopt and look at parallels between both narratives. Finally, I shall give an interpretation of the imagery as a link that also enhances the contrast between the characters.

After the independence and the creation of the New Granada in 1819, the young Latin American republics continued faced disputing power. The caudillos spent their energies in partisan struggles because personal, group, class and ethnic interests overlapped, often under romantic formulations. Between chaos and order, 14 constitutions were drafted in Colombia until reaching the Rionegro Constitution of 1863. Promulgated by the leaders of Radical Liberalism, it went too far in its pursuit of utopia. Federalism, defense of individual freedoms, abolition of the death penalty, freedom of press and separation of the Church and the State are some of its most important conquests, but the consequences of its extremes triggered bloody civil wars. In the heat of these disputes arises José María Vargas Vila (1860-1933), the famous pamphleteer, who enlisted in the ranks of Radical Liberalism defending constitutional rights. This article exposes the position of a Colombian liberal intellectual in face of period called Regeneration that seeks to impose peace and order in Colombia restricting the freedoms and rights granted by the Rionegro Constitution.

In our article we present three literary visions about the Thousand Days War in Colombia (1899 1902) that will end with the loss of Panama and the intervention of the United States in order to build the inter oceanic Canal. The war, the longest of the civil wars in Colombia, marked the course of the years to come and one could speak of a germ of contemporary Violence that has not ceased. It was one of the fundamental events for writers such as Gabriel García Márquez and legendary characters such as Colonel Aureliano Buendía.
