Modified Cloze Test, Essay Test, Personal & Collaborative Writing Tasks in EFL Composition Class at Universitas Andalas 安达斯大学英语写作课的完形填空测试、论文测试、个人与合作写作任务

This retrospective study reports a quantitative analysis of two types of assignments and two test forms used to measure improvement of student’s writing skill in two composition classes at Universitas Andalas, West Sumatera, Indonesia. This project aims to identify the different roles of the two test forms used as well as the relationship and learning effects between the two test forms and weekly personal writing task or in-class group tasks. In this research, two EFL classes of Composition with two different groups of students in two successive academic years were observed. The classes’ activities, held through fourteen meetings for learning activities and two meetings for mid-term and end-of-term examinations, consisted of weekly assignments of composing paragraphs or short essays individually and collaboratively. The first composition class used an integrative test, i.e. cloze test, as the mid semester examination and a short essay test as the final semester examination. The second class used only essay test for both exams. The individual weekly writing task was assigned in both classes while the collaborative writing task was assigned only in the first class. The pearson r corelational analyses on scores of the assignments and the tests in both classes shows that the modified cloze test appeared to still correlately weakly with the essay test but, through t-test analyses, still significant in detecting the learning effect. Personal weekly writing assignments correlate strongly with essay test while the collaborative work appeared to have less significant learning effect on the student's writing competence.

The Effectiveness of Mobile Collaborative Learning on Students’ Writing Performance by Implementing Magnet Summary Strategy 磁体摘要策略在移动协同学习中对学生写作的影响

The purpose of the study was to examine the effectiveness of using Mobile Collaborative Learning (MCL) and Magnet Summary Strategy (MSS) on students’ writing performance and their perceptions towards these strategies. This study utilized a pre-test and post-test control group quasi-experimental design. The results of the paired sample t-test revealed a statistically significant difference between the average pre-test score of 45.8000, indicating a lower level of knowledge among participants before the intervention, and the average post-test score of 68.2800, indicating a substantial improvement in knowledge following the interventions. The intervention used MCL and MSS to help students summarize and organize information, which resulted in improved writing performance. moreover, the significance level of 2-tailed test was less than 5% demonstrating that the difference in the pre-test and post-test scores was statistically meaningful. Thus, it is improbable that the variance in scores happened merely by chance, indicating that the intervention had considerable impact on the participants’ knowledge. The results also showed that the implementation of MCL and MSS helped students to improve their social skills. They appreciated the opportunity to collaborate and communicate with their peers, which helped them to develop their interpersonal skills and learn from each other. Moreover, the implementation of MCL and MSS resulted in a sense of group success when working on group activities, which contributed to a positive learning experience. Overall, the study suggests that using MCL and MSS can be an effective approach to improve students’ writing performance and their social skills.

Muhadhoroh and English Public Speaking Skills: Benefits, Challenges, and Strategies Muhadhoroh和英语公开演讲技巧:益处、挑战和策略

In the modern era, Islamic boarding school education has changed forms of adaptation to the times. One of them is the existence of the term Modern Islamic Boarding School where the education system combines national and international curricula and adapts to the needs of the students. Extracurricular activities are one of the activities that exist in modern Islamic boarding schools. This activity is known as Muhadhoroh. This study explores Muhadhoroh and English-speaking skills related to the benefits, challenges, and strategies for these activities. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method. The research data were obtained from interviews, observations, and documentation while the participants in this study were three English teachers who teach at Amanatul Ummah Islamic boarding school both Indonesian and foreign teachers. The research data were analyzed in four stages, namely data collection, data display, data reduction, and conclusion. The results of this study indicate that Muhadhoroh could provide opportunities for students to develop talents in the field of English public speaking skills because students had the opportunity to perform various kinds of English performances in public. Related to challenges, this activity has challenges including preparation, time management, and facilities. Even so, several strategies could be taken to overcome these challenges, including arranging preparation and performance schedules, utilizing free time and shifting school schedules into preparation and performance schedules, as well as adding facilities by renting equipment to other parties during activities. This study is limited in location and the number of participants who are only in one Islamic boarding school and the type of research instrument. It is recommended for further research to be able to conduct similar research by adding variations of participants and Islamic boarding schools as well as adding variations of research instruments

Airline Collocation: Frequency Based Analysis with COCA as a Corpus 航空公司搭配:以COCA为语料库的频率分析

Collocations are words that co-occur together in any text and have definite association. The use of collocations is part of linguistic awareness which defines how language is used naturally. This study aims to analyze the collocations used in airlines by using Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). The data were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Quantitatively, the data were calculated regarding the frequency, topics and cluster. Qualitatively, the data were verbally analyzed, described, and discussed. The big data is taken from 1990-2019. The frequent words in area of airlines management found in COCA are used as keywords to find concordance of other words or phrases. The results of the study shows that from the three words taken from the script of flight announcement in airport ‘flight’, ‘passenger’, and ‘boarding’ it was found that the frequency risen is 73,870. The topics related to the three words of airlines found is 22,798. The clusters found from the three words by COCA is 34,006 which ‘flight’ word has the largest clusters (18,730). From the COCA analysis, the new words or idioms related to airlines can be used as teaching material in vocabulary for aviation or airlines students.

Gender Representation in Narrative Texts in English Textbook: Questioning the Values through the 2013 Curriculum 英语教材叙事文本中的性别表征:通过2013年课程对价值观的质疑

This study aims to reveal gender values ​​in the narrative text of English textbook and how the values meet the requirement of the 2013 Curriculum. This research uses a qualitative approach. The data source is narrative text in English textbook published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. Data collected through documentation techniques by citing. Meanwhile, the data analysis procedure includes finding how many narrative texts are in the English textbook, reading the text carefully, taking notes and collecting citations. In addition, it is found that the narrative text was dominated by the values ​​of gender inequality. Gender inequality is still considered as a silent missile in today’s education and is still present in many stories or classic narrative texts in English textbooks. The researcher also found the unsuitability of the values​​with the 2013 Curriculum. Finally, based on the findings of this study, the researcher suggested that educational institutions pay more attention to the content of textbooks, not only in accordance with the current curriculum, but also according to student’s needs.

Small Group Discussion Method’s Effectivity for Improving the Students of Tenth-Grade Vocational High School 7 Semarang’s Speaking Ability 小组讨论法对提高中职十年级学生三宝语口语能力的有效性

Many Indonesian students find it difficult to master English as a second language. One of the essential skills that must be mastered is speaking skill. People who like English must concerted effort to improve their English language skills. In teaching and learning, the teacher has a big responsibility. Teachers must master learning strategies to solve problems faced by the students and help them comprehend their speaking skills to achieve the goal of learning. This research uses experimental methodology to examine the effect of the small-group discussion method on students' ability to communicate verbally. The researchers applied a pre-experimental strategy, which included a pre-test before providing the chosen treatment. A post-test was given to complete the data collection after the treatments. The researchers used thirty-six students from SMK N 7 Semarang as a sample in this research. The research's findings indicates that the post-test score outperformed the pre-test score. On the other hand, at the significant level of 0,05, the t-score result is greater than the t-table. As a result, we can decide from the data analysis that the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is acceptable whereas the Null Hypothesis (Ho) is unacceptable. In accordance with the findings, conducting small group discussions as a teaching strategy significantly improves students' speaking abilities. As a result, it is suggested that English teachers offer this method as an attempt.

This research uses experimental methodology to examine the effect of the small-group discussion method on students' ability to communicate verbally. The researchers applied a pre-experimental strategy, which included a pre-test before providing the chosen treatment. A post-test was given to complete the data collection after the treatments. The researchers used thirty-six students from SMK N 7 Semarang as a sample in this research. The research's findings indicates that the post-test score outperformed the pre-test score. On the other hand, at the significant level of 0,05, the t-score result is greater than the t-table. As a result, we can decide from the data analysis that the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is acceptable whereas the Null Hypothesis (Ho) is unacceptable. In accordance with the findings, conducting small group discussions as a teaching strategy significantly improves students' speaking abilities. Understanding the Teacher-students’ Presuppositions in the Classroom Interaction 课堂互动中师生预设的理解

The aim of this study is to examine the presuppositions that occur between teachers and students during classroom interactions. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach to describe the teachers and students’ interactions in the classroom and how the presuppositions can be understood well in their interactions. The data were collected through recording method during the classroom interactions. Descriptive analysis was used to categorize and interpret the data, and lead to the identification of five types of presuppositions: existential, factive, lexical, structural, and non-factive presupposition. The study found that each utterance contained various forms that indicated presuppositions, and each type of presuppositions was not exclusively indicated by a specific word-form. Therefore, categorizing each type of presupposition requires consideration of the contexts of the speaker's discussion, rather than solely looking at the phrase used.

Non-EFL Students’ Spontaneous Technique to Reduce Anxiety in ELT Speaking Practice Class 非英语学生在英语口语练习课上减少焦虑的自发技巧

This research investigated non-EFL students’ spontaneous technique to reduce their English-speaking anxiety. This research proposes an instrument in three areas and the findings are parallel with them. The first scope is the use of various instruments which could give both strengths and lacks to students. The proper instruments help students to maintain the time necessary. The inappropriate use of the instrument lengthens students’ time to perform their speaking. The second finding scope is students' method of reducing anxiety through managing language use which covers diction, synonym, intonation management, length of speech, punctuation use, and repetition. The verbal language used represents students' previous experience and their readiness. The third finding scope is students’ method of reducing anxiety through managing non-linguistic aspects that cover facial expression, eye contact, body language, and changing of standing up position. The main conclusion is that reducing anxiety needs a well-prepared method or program.

Syllabus Design for Tertiary Level Students in Bahasa Inggris Niaga Course 马来文课程专上学生教学大纲设计

Teaching English in non-English department needs meticulous preparation since it is given integrative in four skills within restricted credit hours, 4 SKS. Students of Economic Department need to be prepared as profound entrepreneur that they are keen on creating occupations and other professions but teacher solely. The research was aimed to design topics and methods in syllabus of Bahasa Inggris Niaga course. This research was set out by implementing ADDIE in designing the syllabus for tertiary students who major in economic department. Analysis as the first step was done by doing interview and giving questionnaire. The result indicated ten significant topics and seven relevant methods in designing Bahasa Inggris Niaga syllabus. They were designed by concerning on the undergraduate students’ necessity in pre intermediate level.

Literacy in EFL Classroom: In-Service English Teachers’ Perceptions and Practices from Multiliteracies Perspective 英语课堂素养:多元素养视角下在职英语教师的认知与实践

The concept of literacy has evolved significantly over the years, with the advent of new technologies and the changing needs of society. In the context of ELT, the study of literacy conceptions and practices is still under-explored. Therefore, this study aims at exploring in-service English teachers’ perceptions and practices of literacy in ELT settings from a multiliteracies perspective. This research used a qualitative case study. The data were taken from in-service English teachers from one of the state high schools in Surabaya, Indonesia through interviews, observation, and document review. The data were then analyzed using thematic analysis. The result indicated that the in-service English teachers perceived a general conception of literacy, a skill-based conception of literacy, and literacy as social practice. In general, the English teachers lacked an understanding of the concept of literacy comprehensively and they associated literacy with skills. In addition, concerning literacy practices from a multiliteracy perspective covered the integration of multimodal in the use of media, the use of technology in teaching and learning activities, and a variety of literacy instructions. Despite some difficulties, the teachers utilized multiple modes of media and technology. This study might have implications for the understanding of the conception of literacy and teaching practices in an EFL setting.
