Superstrates are used to design high directivity microstrip antennas (MSAs) with a broadside radiation pattern. This paper investigates the impact of the superstrate size on the radiation of a MSA. A half wavelength square-shaped patch element was used to make the antenna resonates around 4 GHz. A superstrate was placed above the radiating patch keeping an air gap of 35 mm in between. Superstrates of six different sizes were used and the MSAs were simulated. Performances of all the MSAs were analyzed by means of the resonant behavior, directivity, efficiency and radiation characteristics. There is a minimum size below that, the effect of the superstrate is negligible.

With the advent of global warming, research studies have indicated concerns due to its impact on thunderstorm and lightning which could have detrimental impact on structures. Though there has been substantial progress related to protection of structures against lightning, research carried out during the past decades have led the lightning community to develop improved procedures for evaluating lightning exposure to structures. The location of vulnerable points struck by lightning and hence the placement of air terminals is obtained based on Rolling Sphere Method (RSM) whereby the striking distance is obtained as a function of stroke current. However, the model ignores dynamics of propagation of downward and upward leaders, geometry of the structure etc. This aspect becomes vital for smaller rolling sphere radii for tall structures with respect to several striking points. This research proposes carrying out detailed analysis based on utilizing the Modified Rolling Sphere Method (MRSM) which is based on the concept of an upward directed leader and its interaction with the downward leader during lightning strike on a tall structure. This research involves detailed analysis of lightning protection effectiveness based on MRSM for one of the tallest World Heritage Chola temple architectures in south India. Analysis based on varying lightning stroke currents has been carried out to ascertain the vulnerable points due to varying lightning protection levels. Further, a detailed failure analysis is also carried in line with the requirements of international standards to ascertain additional lightning protection requirements that would enable effective LPS for the proposed heritage monument.

Increased penetration of rooftop solar PV is causing undesirable technical impacts on the distribution networks. Several urban distribution transformers in Sri Lanka are exceeding fifty percent of the solar PV over the transformer capacity, which shed a green light to assess the cumulative effect of the rooftop solar PVs. In this study, a distribution feeder with high solar PV penetration has been selected and power quality issues such as harmonics, over voltage and DC injection are analyzed under various conditions. Effects of non-linear loads were also assessed to create an accurate representation of the existing network. The simulation results identify whether the selected system satisfies the statutory limits imposed by various global regulations concerned with power quality.

In the field of agriculture, development of efficient IoT based smart irrigation system is similarly a valuable requirement for farmers. In this research, a low cost IoT and weather based smart irrigation system is developed. First, an efficient drip irrigation system which can automatically control the water supply to plants based on soil moisture conditions is developed. Next, this water efficient irrigation system is given IoT based communication capabilities to remotely monitor soil moisture conditions and to manually control water supply by a remote user. Further, temperature, humidity and rain drop sensors are integrated to the system and is upgraded to provide monitoring of these parameters by the remote user via internet. These weather parameters of the field are saved in real time in a remote database. Finally, a weather prediction algorithm is implemented to control the water supply according to the existing weather condition. The proposed smart irrigation system will provide an effective method to irrigate farmer's cultivation.

Trans-humeral prostheses replace an amputated limb above elbow. An existing prosthesis needs a healthy stump arm to achieve its full functionality. However, the stump arm becomes weak due to various reasons. Trans-humeral ortho-prosthesis is a device which enables to use the trans-humeral prostheses even for the amputees with the weak stump arm by assisting the weak stump arm. This paper proposes a trans-humeral ortho-prosthesis with a novel redundant shoulder orthosis which enables the assistance to the stump arm while supporting the loads applied by the prosthesis. The combination of passive and active Degrees of Freedom (DoF) with redundancy at the introducing orthosis section, facilitates the trans-humeral ortho-prosthesis to adapt according to the anthropometry of the various amputees. Experiments have been carried out to evaluate the impact of the proposed 6DoF shoulder orthosis towards the human like motion generation of the trans-humeral ortho-prosthesis.

Question generation is one of the most important research area related to Natural Language Processing. Though there are several studies have been carried out by following different approaches, most of those studies address only the factoid question generation and lack of studies for the progress of learning process. The research is about generating essay questions as a support for learning in Sinhala language and these questions are up to the levels of Bloom's taxonomy. Therefore, the resulting questions are suitable to assess student knowledge on a particular domain based on different aspects. Content specific question generation is highly encouraged by the proposed approach. Relation extraction is the most important process of the system, for that an evolutionary ontology model is proposed. Extraction of inferences among domain-specific concepts is possible with the use of the evolutionary ontology.

This research focuses on two self-localization methods for observation of the sea floor and sampling. One is a method of estimate the self-localization using Kalman filter from the acceleration data calculated from equation of motion and the velocity data considering the effect of underwater vehicle's oscillation. The other is visual odometry using a stereo camera. The AUV was deployed in a sea area 40m depth to evaluate the performance of self-localization estimated by two methods. Self-localization estimation using Kalman filter was less accurate than visual odometry, but it was confirmed that the variance of the estimated velocity was smaller than before estimation. In the visual odometry using stereo camera, it was confirmed that the estimation error depends on the travel direction of AUV and the moving direction of a stereo camera.

Non Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) is a promising technique for fifth generation (5G) wireless cellular networks with the aim to achieve capacity goals and better performance. Generally, power domain NOMA is tested for two user equipment (UE) based systems. Capacity improvement of NOMA system with accurate power allocation is a key challenge. To meet this challenge, different techniques are been introduced. In this paper, basic NOMA model with two users is extended for multiple users to achieve higher capacity. We implement NOMA with three and four UE's, where superposition coding is introduced at the transmitter side and Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) at the receiving end. With increased number of NOMA users, a crucial problem is to accurately allocate transmit powers for all the users. A main contribution of this paper is the selection of accurate power allocation and modulation schemes based on BER performance. Furthermore, the proposed multiuser NOMA scheme is simulated in 5G path loss model namely NYUSIM Channel Model. This paper provides foundation of accurate power allocation mechanisms for NOMA based systems in the future.

Inverted pendulum mounted on a cart is an inherently unstable system which requires control effort to stabilize it at its upright position. In this single input multi output system the pendulum is balanced by controlling the horizontal motion of the cart. Various controller design techniques have been developed to control such systems like PID controllers, LQR controllers, Neural networks etc. The performance of the system for controlling methods of PD (Proportional Derivative) controller and LQR (Linear Quadratic Regulator) controller are compared by simulating in MATLAB SIMULINK and the results are validated through results obtained from a real inverted pendulum system.

Evolution of TFET has revolutionized semiconductor physics and these has been a tremendous and steady in development of VLSI technology incorporating TFET. An innovative TFET called Double Symmetrical Source Tunnel FET (DSS-TFET) is put forward in this paper, which foster higher ON Current (ION) with smaller driving voltage as compared to conventional TFETs. The tunnelling area is considerably reduced which in turn increases the ION, for a smaller turn on voltage. The influence of variation parameters like channel length, oxide thickness, gate work function and Source-length on the efficiency of the device have been studied and compared with conventional TFET devices. Silvaco-Atlas 2-D simulation has been used in the work to achieve excellent SS of 23mV/decade and high ION/IOFF of 1013 at $mathrm{V}_{text{DS}}=0.1mathrm{V}$. 1-D Quantum confinement effect has been studied for the proposed DSS-TFET using the Schrödinger-Poisson model in the simulations. The DSS-TFET has excellent performance characteristics and is viable for low power applications.
